Footnotes
This Aston Martin DB5's accompanying copy guarantee form records that '1564/ R' was supplied new via H W Motors to Marshall Andrew Co Ltd (building and civil engineering contractors) of London SW1. The original finish is recorded as Dubonnet with fawn interior trim, while chrome road wheels are the only items of non-standard equipment listed. The car's first registration was 'BPL 390B', which it retains.
The current vendor has owned this DB5 since he purchased the car for £1, 950 from H R Owen in February 1969 at 37, 000 miles, making it a very rare two-owners-from-new example we are told. When purchased, the Aston came with a full up-to-date service history (on file). We are advised by the vendor that the car was originally raced, as evidenced by competitor numbers visible beneath the current paintwork.
Also on file are numerous old MoTs dating from 1970 to the present. The mileage was 73, 000 in 1982 and evidently the odometer was zeroed sometime that year as the September 1983 reading is 642 miles. In the last 40 years the car has covered only some 27, 000 miles.
In 2004 the DB5 was repainted in its original colour following repairs to the chassis and sills, with some works carried out by marque specialists Davron of Dinton, Wiltshire, who had been servicing the car since circa 2000 (bills on file). The most recent bills were issued by Dawson Engineering of Ringwood, Hampshire for annual works to keep the car on the road. An MoT failure in April 2018 (odometer reading 27, 400 miles) listed a leaking fuel system, front brake binding, leaking shock absorber, and insecure wheels x3 as faults. The car has not been used since.
Prior to sale, the DB5 was inspected by renowned marque specialists Aston Service Dorset, whose report on its condition and the estimated costs of restoration is available for inspection. ASD found that the "general condition of the chassis and body is good, recently replaced front outriggers, underneath is all generally solid, minor paint blemishes and no immediate signs of corrosion through the paintwork in the sill or other areas"
"Interior is very original, could be described as tatty but it would ruin the usability of the car to replace it, so would leave as it is apart from a good feed and clean, even the carpets are as would be expected from the age of the car but a good clean and they will be fine..."
ASD concluded that while being 'a runner' a full mechanical overhaul is needed; the engine, transmission, suspension and brakes all requiring attention.
