1968 Renault Caravelle RHD For Sale
Introduced to the UK in 1962 as the Caravelle and designed by the Italian studio Frua, this model was built for Renault by Chausson with final assembly and trim, virtually by hand, by Brissoneau and Lotz. The genius of another Italian, engineer Amédée Gordini increased the output of the small Dauphine engine somewhat - the larger 1108cc R8 engines in the later Caravelle versions – such as this one - producing a brisk and respectable performance, matched with all-round disc brakes. Oozing French ‘Riviera’ styling, the Caravelle Convertible was not cheap at £1296 – against the £582 Morris Minor Convertible - consequently attracting more affluent drivers seeking that little bit of extra style in those swinging sixties. Economy, practicality and personality are the characteristics of this overlooked and rare Sixties classic.
The 79, 000 miles was previously supported by MOT documents dating back to 1985 which were misplaced by the previous owner. Prior to 2004, the car was in the hands of a single owner for over 20 years and was previously light metallic blue. The car was restored and repainted some time after 2004. She passed a clean MoT in 2006 with no advisories. In 2018 the car was treated to a rebuild of the carburettors, the engine bay was repainted and the engine block was also clean and repainted.
The car comes with a tonno and a large number of parts. The hard and soft tops are in good condition and operate as they should. The history file contains a V5, details of the car prior to the restoration and an invoice for the work completed on the car in 2018.
This particular example is an older restoration in need of some final fettling to be ready for daily use.
