Simple, clean, elegant, and understated: that would describe the aerodynamic little Porsche 356 coupe of the early to mid-1950s. While still utilizing some parts and design concepts originally created for the humble Volkswagen Beetle, by 1953 the 356 showed clear signs of the steady development and evolution demanded by Porsche’s designers and engineers. The new model was constantly improving as the factory strove to simplify the manufacturing process for these largely hand-built automobiles.
The basic body shape remained fairly constant – indeed, the basic profile would not change until the series ended production in 1964 – but many details changed over the years. From a two-piece windshield and bumpers fitted directly to the nose and tail panels, one now saw a single-piece windshield with a mild vee and bumpers that were now separated from the body. The interior trim was upgraded with new hardware.
The magnificent 1953 Porsche 356 1500 coupe featured here is finished in gorgeous factory-correct medium ivory over the red leather interior. This original California car was just released after over 50 years of single collector ownership and is a recipient of a multiyear, comprehensive nut and bolt restoration by marque experts completed in 2017. The attention to detail and high-level restoration make this the perfect example to add to any premier Porsche collection. This exquisite Porsche 356 pre-A coupe was completed at the old Stuttgart-based Porsche Works on March 10, 1953, as the 179th of just 1, 546 produced. Acquired in Petaluma, California in 1972 from the Miranda family by its second and final owner who kept it for over 50 years.
