Description
The MKIX Jaguar was the last incarnation of the model first introduced in the early 1950's with the MKVII. The model replaced the pre war designed MKV but, because Bentley were producing a MKVI model, Jaguar were unable to use that designation for their new model. The MKVII, VIII and IX were the models which fully epitomised the "Grace, Space, Pace" promotion from the Jaguar factory. But the last of the line, 3. 8 MKIX came with the ultimate specification. The 3. 8 XK engine and power steering lifted the MKIX into another level. In 1962 Autocar tested a used MKIX automatic with 34, 000 recorded miles and it achieved the 0 to 60 mph dash in 10. 1 seconds and 0 to 100 mph is under 29 seconds. Not too bad for an 1800kg, 6 seater saloon car - 60 years ago. Introduced in 1958, the MKIX was externally identical to the MKVIII but the new model featured all round disc brakes, the 220bhp 3. 8 XK engine and power steering. This example left the production line on the 14th December 1960 and was supplied to Jaguar Dealer, Man Egerton, Norwich. It would appear that the car may have been a demonstrator, because it was not actually registered until October 1961. A Mr D. B, Claxton acquired the car on the 11th October 1964 and kept it for 21 years to October 1985, when it passed to Mr R. G. Sharman, who appears to have retained it for another 37 years. The 81, 000 recorded miles is believed to be genuine. It has been part of a large private collection for many years. This imposing piece of Jaguar history is presented in super solid, very original and honest condition. The car is mechanically excellent with the 220bhp 3. 8 XK engine readily firing up and maintaining a healthy burble from its stainless steel tail pipes. All gears engage and the car drives as one would expect of the model. The interior is a wonderful place to be with vast bench seats both front and rear. All gauges appear to be in working order, as are heater, wipers, lights and fuel tank transfer switches. Rear passengers are provided with burr walnut veneered picnic tables, document cabinet, clock and twin cigar lighters. The whole interior has a wonderful patina gained from 61 years of limited use. The leather has creases and marks associated with the cars age, the headlining is excellent, sun roof is in perfect working order and the carpets are excellent. The original radio is still present. The motor car is equipped with a 16" "Superlight" wood rime steering wheel with polished alloy horn push. The glorious Imperial Maroon livery does have age related micro blisters in a few areas but this does not distract from the overall magnificence of this imposing motorcar. The chrome work is in superb original condition and the underside is extremely sound. The original, door mounted tool boxes are still present and still retain some tools and servicing items. The boot is very clean and does contain the original jack, hand pumped tyre inflater and grease gun. This magnificent beast is best described as a very sound, eminently usable example of classic Jaguar motoring. The MoT history of the car shows that it has covered very few miles since records were kept back in 2005 and has had no advisories for recent MoT's. The car comes with a JDHT Heritage Certificate. original owners manual, parts manual, workshop manual and MoT certificates dating back to 2007.
