Rover P6 3500s – 3 Private Owners/ 41, 000 Miles
Launched at the 1963 Earls Court Motor Show, the P6 was aimed at the young executive who wanted modern, sporting, high quality transport. Winner of the European Car of the Year Award 1964, it had an advanced design that included a De Dion tube rear suspension, disc brakes all round and an alloy bonnet and boot lid.
The fabulous Buick derived 3528cc V8 was introduced in 1968 and in 1971 the 3500s (manual) joined the party offering a 0-60mph in under 9. 00 seconds, a top speed in excess of 120mph and wonderful road manners – the faster you drive the bigger the smile – it is addictive.
At Milestone Classics we have a soft spot for the P6 but struggle to find examples that meet our exacting standards. We were delighted when this lovely 3500s was offered to us.
The Green Logbook (VE60) confirms that the car was originally registered to University Motors (Kingston-upon-Thames) on 17th April 1973 and the first private owner retained the car for the next 35 years. After a period of time in storage the family of the first keeper approached the P6 Owners Club and the car passed to the second private owner in 2011 and the last/ third private owner, an engineer, in 2012.
Today the car presents exceptionally well with stunning almond paint/ black vinyl roof and super bright chrome work. The beauty is far from skin deep – there are absolutely no corrosion issues with this car.
Mechanically the ‘S’ was recommissioned by the last owner and benefits from attention to brakes, suspension, a larger capacity radiator and stainless-steel exhaust.
Sitting on Rover SD1 wheels (to allow higher spec Dunlop SP Sports tyres) the Rover is fitted with the factory option ‘Continental Touring Kit’ which includes a strengthened aluminium boot lid to enable the carrying of the spare wheel on top.
The interior boasts the desirable Rover wood rim steering wheel, ‘E. T’ style headrests, unmarked box pleat seats and original optional rubber floor mats to both the front and rear. Carpets and headlining are outstanding.
The history file includes original Green Logbook, “Gauntlet” car warranty document from 1974, University Motors license holder, MOT’s back to 1978, Drivers Handbook. invoices etc.
