This is a very rare right hand drive Type 2 Bay Window example with the desirable early features including the low lights (headlights and indicators below the grille) and smaller tail lights, the latter were soon upgraded to the larger rear lights.

The VW production certificate on file confirms that the vehicle was originally supplied to the South African market and unlike most was relatively well cared for as upon its arrival into the UK in 2017 it was found to be original, complete and running albeit in need of some work to make it lovely.

To this end the VW was sent to Export 56, highly respected restorers of early Porsche’s who also have a penchant for these early VW Utility models. Following inspection the body was stripped and all corrosion removed from the all-important chassis and underpinnings hence if you look inside what Type 2 aficionados the treasure chest you will see it is all new and treated. The body was then built up following paint with either refurbished or NOS trim as required. The mechanicals were similarly stripped and rebuilt throughout with new or refurbished parts as required subtle and accepted upgrades were included during this process, for example, the very welcome inclusion of disc brakes. Most recently Export 56 have fitted a new and powerful twin carb 1, 800 cc engine unit with stainless exhaust system which provides effortless 75-80 mph cruising. Invoices amounting to in excess of £20, 000 details the work completed by Export 56.

What is lovely on this Bay Window is the detail, the interior remains original with a lovely patina, the original radio and period correct bamboo shelving enhancing the look. The rear deck is painted with rubberised paint meaning it is fit for purpose whilst the wonderful wooden rails were made by hand in Iroko (better than oak as don't twist), the off the shelf items being deemed not good enough. A high quality, reinforced canvas roof features with stainless fittings and correct wooden roof bars to complete the period feel.

All in all this is a very good example of a rare and desirable Type 2 that has exactly the ‘look and feel’ that enthusiasts strive for, retaining an original patina whilst being future-proofed against fundamental degradation. It also performs excellently on the road feeling very well sorted with an unexpected turn of speed. As ever, it remains equally at home on a South Coast surf beach, transporting enthusiasts to Goodwood or completing light commercial duties.
