We are delighted to present for sale this 1987 Land Rover® 90, only released from the forces in 2012 with just 3 former keepers. We are a real fan of these - not only do they provide superb value, but due to dry storage & regular maintenance, they have survived far better than their civilian counterparts... and this one is no exception.
Externally, this has all the features an enthusiast will want to see - screw lenses for easy bulb changes, front lamp guards, recent bumper, rear bumperettes, NATO hitch and a bonnet mounted spare (matching). The vehicle sits on a full set of Michelin 750s, which are considered one of the very best tyres for these trucks - mixing off and on road capability. The canvas is a proper winterised type & will survive much better than modern reproductions.... the vent on the wing is also a SNOW vent, so you won't get stuck in a heavy blizzard. LED headlights mean a much clearer view of the road ahead, as well as reducing load on the alternator and electrical system. We really think the photos speak for themselves on this one.
On the inside, there is deluxe carpeting throughout, with front high back seats and cubby box with cupholders - handy for a drive through and to keep items out of sight. It is great to see the military convoy switch and map light are still fitted and survive. The rear is unfitted as the photos show, but could house bench seats on request for £595 to give seating for six people including the driver. Aluminium door tops mean that these won't rot away with the passage of time either.
This vehicle was purchased locally, and we collected it in person - a journey of 40 miles back to our premises, during which it performed without fault - and we enjoyed the drive too. The "big USP" of these 90s is that they have old school mechanical engineering which can be easily fixed without the need for complex ECU's or OBD... however, they still have all the creature comforts you'd hope for - Coil Springs, 5 Speed synchromesh gearbox, etc etc - so it feels like a modern 90 to own, without the complications of the newer variants. This was the preferred engine of the military because although they are not a speed machine like the later turbo engines, they are much more reliable than the later units - we've known these with over 2x the mileage of this one and they still run and work without any issues at all (with just regular servicing costs).
In summary then, if you are looking for a ragtop 90 which benefits from classic insurances, will soon be MOT & Tax Exempt and can also be used on a far more frequent basis than a Series, then this could be for you. In our opinion, these 90s are a great value prospect - able to do all the usual things one would expect from a modern 90/ Defender, but without the price tag associated with them.... plus you benefit from the ex-military cool British looks!
