EXTERIOR
Looking sharp in its original Perlweiss paint this ‘61 bug boasts a beautiful aged patina throughout. But what really makes this one so special is that it has never required any welding or restorative work. The finish is remarkably original but as to be expected with 63-year-old paint there are some minor blemishes and defects to note, namely an honest dusting of light frontal stone chips and a few carefully touched-in marks. That said the car still presents beautifully, oozes plenty of charm and certainly draws many admiring glances out on the road. A true survivor in highly original and very solid condition and, being a pre-62 model, this one benefits from the smaller, more attractive rear lights.
INTERIOR
The nicely appointed cabin presents extremely well throughout and, much like the exterior, everything is lovely and original. The textured cloth upholstery shows next to no signs of any wear and the seats are still nice and springy. The original Oatmeal square weave carpets are in good condition and the rubber floor coverings are also very clean. Quite remarkably the factory Blaupunkt radio remains in place and although not currently operational is a seldom seen option that certainly completes the look. Being really picky there are a few small marks and chips on the glove box lid and around the door sills but these only evidence the car’s honesty further.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
With its original 1200cc flat-four engine the Beetle is a real joy to drive, and what it lacks in power it more than makes up for in character. The car has been driven and enjoyed by the current lady owner for the last 5 years. To help preserve its amazing condition it has only ever been taken out in good weather and has always been garaged when not in use. After a winter seeing little action the car has just been fully inspected by our trusted classic car workshop. It was last serviced in July 2023 and most recently benefits from new spark plugs and a full strip-down and clean of the carburettor.
HISTORY FILE
Original, unwelded and truly unrestored examples of this era of Beetle are fast becoming a rarity, especially in such fine condition. This particular example was first registered in Norway in 1961. In 2019, following on from a long period in dry storage, the car was imported into the UK where it has remained with the same lady owner ever since – the V5C shows zero former keepers.
The History File is complete with a selection of paperwok detailing the car’s recent maintenance history, a certificate of authenticity and data sheet from VW Classic confirming the original build specification, various DVLA and registration documents, and some nice period paperwork from Norway.
