Details
The first Porsche Speedster was famously introduced by New York-based Porsche importer Max Hoffman to meet US demand for a fun, basic sports car. It was such a success that nearly 5, 000 were made in the four year period it was on sale, from 1954 to 1958.
It’s perhaps surprising therefore that it took nearly 30 years for Porsche to revive the Speedster concept and name, when it unveiled the new G-Series Speedster at the 1988 Frankfurt Motor Show. The car was based on a 3. 2 Carrera with its distinctive raked back windscreen, bucket seats and minimal folding top sold extremely well with 2, 000 being made, mostly selling to the American market.
Soon the 3. 2 Carrera’s successor arrived in the 964 and the Speedster design was applied to this fresh platform which featured numerous upgrades including heavily revised engine, gearbox, brakes amongst other things. Unlike the 3. 2 Speedster, this car was more performance focused and sat somewhere between the Carrera 2 and Carrera RS. Suspension was softer than the track-focused RS but interior comforts were limited to save weight.
Sales of the new Speedster were surprisingly limited, with only 936 sold, again mostly to the USA with only 14 arriving the UK, 8 during 1993 and 6 during 1994. Interestingly, Porsche was expecting greater things, putting aside 3, 000 VIN numbers for the model.
This car, originally sold by Lancaster Cambridge and registered in January 1994 has remained in the UK since new. It was ordered in the special order colour of Amazon Green Metallic with black interior and sports seats. It retains its service and MOT history from new and remains in excellent condition.
