Description
Volvo 240 Torslanda TURBO K673 PNR What is that? A proper sleeper: The Volvo 240 was the car that proved so good that Volvo struggled to replace it. Production ran from 1973 to 1994, that’s 21 years, in which it was the world’s most popular estate car! Despite numerous other special models, it is this late Torslanda model that captured hearts and minds and is still sought after, as it was the last model before production of the 240 was finally halted in 1994. It offers three different exterior colours, tinted glass, plastic exterior trim, five-spoke alloy wheels, stylish body stripes and the iconic Torslanda badges; these cars were also standard with heated seats. The modifications were chosen to create a fast, reliable yet usable car. These include a completely rebuilt 2. 3 B230FK redblock engine with a specially manufactured 431 head, a rebuilt V70R KKK turbo and a lightened flywheel. A 5-speed M90 gearbox with customised linkage that mates to the original 240 gear knob was fitted and offers a markedly upgraded driveline. The full stainless steel exhaust hints at the car’s modifications without screaming. A subtle lowering with adjustable dampers and special springs for the 200 series provides compliant handling. The suspension was fully polybushed and paired with thicker front and rear stabilisers to improve handling. The original wheels were retained but fitted with slightly wider tyres with lower profile, which overall improved grip. How does it drive? The estimated 280 hp have certainly improved performance, but it isn’t wild; we see no reason why it couldn’t be used as a daily driver, all modifications should improve the existing platform and not compromise it, while the practicality of the car was retained, the subtle appearance can blend in or surprise when required. Robert Redford was famously daily-driving a Volvo estate! The original vehicle presents in excellent condition, as it has never been welded, the paint is superb, as is the blue velour interior. A complete owner’s handbook, two original keys and a well-stamped service book are present to show that the car was highly valued. The world’s favourite estate has seen a steady rise in popularity and value as its place in the world of classics has been established. Now is a good time to ride the wave of “modern classic enthusiasm” and secure the ultimate practical sleeper wagon classic.
