Description

Very rare original Salmson with GS8 suspension chassis (no. 21. 112), famous GSS engine with 3 roller bearings, original Salmson 4-speed gearbox, Rudge wheels. One of the few Salmsons with original factory Grand Prix bodywork. This bodywork is reputed (from research by Chris Draper) to have come from the 1928 Motor Show car. The very best that Salmson could offer its (racing) customers in the late 1920s. The car has Dutch registration (MT 803 in the UK). The current owner has owned this Salmson for over 20 years. In the late fifties Mark Rigg and his father, well-known Bugatti rebuilders and racers, bought the car from Ken Radburn, the founder of the Salmson register in England. They made the main change from the original factory specification by fitting an underfloor fuel tank rather than a canopy tank. This was done to lower the centre of gravity and they didn't like having a tank above their knees. The rear brakes are also rod-actuated rather than cable-actuated. The pressure in the reservoir comes from a Bugatti air pump. The current owner has installed a 'hidden' electric fuel pump, just to keep both hands on the wheel! Both systems can be used. After the Rigg family, the car passed into the hands of Guy Weightman, a good friend of Chris Draper. Guy had also acquired all the existing Salmson spares from the importer via Vic Dutton, who worked for SMS London. In 2003, Chris Draper bought the spare parts stock from his friend, including the car. Shortly afterwards, the current owner purchased this beautiful and rare Salmson. The car was in remarkable original condition but was in need of a mechanical overhaul. The engine was made by John Deacon. A new engine block with larger flanges was used, new crankshaft roller bearings with a reinforced bridge around the central bearing, new lightweight connecting rods (Arrow), new high compression pistons, improved oil system, new cross shaft wheels etc. New bearings were installed in the gearbox and the wheels received new spokes. The brakes were fitted with 'soft liners', which greatly improved braking. Special Michelin Bibendum tyres were fitted. The cylinder head is a very rare '3-port cylinder head'. This gives the choice of using one or two carburettors. The car was delivered with an SU in the middle but now runs on two beautiful and original Solex MHD carburettors. In addition, a special 4 to 1 stainless steel external exhaust system was built. To ensure good cooling in racing conditions and high outside temperatures, the owner has installed a bypass and a 2-speed water pump (also hidden). For added safety, there is a Kenlow fan. Due to Dutch regulations, aluminium cycle wings have been manufactured. In 2021, the cylinder head and cam box are overhauled. Two new overhead camshafts (made by Kent UK), new rocker arms, (slightly larger) valves... all made by BDRS UK. This rare and original car was part of the 2023 exhibition 'From Cyclecar to Grand Sport' at the Louwman Museum. It drives and looks great and is paving the way for the Mille Miglia. After 22 years, it's time to pass the car on to another enthusiast.
