THE ALFAHOLICS GTA-R
The restomod trend of the past decade or so has been driven primarily by firms improving on the Porsche 911 with admittedly spectacular results. To many, these are the 'perfect' classics all the looks, delicacy, and involvement of driving a true classic sports car, made faster, lighter, and safer through the use of modern technology, materials, and development. But for enthusiasts after something a little different perhaps with some Italian flair options have been rather more limited.
Enter Alfaholics. Aside from having what is, in our opinion, one of the coolest brand names in motoring, this family-run shop in Clevedon, North Somerset, England, has an enviable reputation for their restoration, race-prep, and parts support of classic Alfa Romeos. Through their decades of experience with Alfa Romeo's celebrated 105-series Giulia, they developed an unparalleled catalogue of knowledge. Back as far as 2003, Alfaholics built their first GTA-R a lightweight 'Stepnose' Giulia restomod which served as the development car for many of their high-performance parts.
More recently, Alfaholics applied the experience from that first GTA-R to a line of highly exclusive customer cars. Meticulously built to exacting standards, there are endless variations of bespoke options including air conditioning, power steering, lightweight bodies, big engines, and more. In true restomod fashion, these cars are completely rebuilt to the last fastener, utilizing lightweight aluminum shells, composite panels, and Alfa Romeo Twin Spark engines built and tuned in-house. Featherweight on the road and packing more than 200bhp, the GTA-R delivers incredible performance, particularly on challenging roads where the race-honed chassis can be fully exploited. Putting the GTA-R into perspective, some journalists have compared the Alfaholics cars to the likes of Tuthill and Singer Porsches, and rightfully so.
But perhaps the best summary and compliment to the Alfaholics GTA-R was by Top Gear who said: "These things are so good, even Gordon Murray has one." That might be all the praise one would ever need.
THE CAR OFFERED
It is with great pleasure that we offer Alfaholics GTA-R #009, a sublime all-aluminum coupe finished in dark blue over red upholstery, and sitting on the now-iconic Alfaholics wheels. As a testament to the quality and enduring character of these spectacular cars, it is believed that 009 is the first full in-house Alfaholics build ever to be offered at public auction. It certainly seems owners love these cars and rarely let them go.
As with every GTA-R, #009 is uniquely equipped to the original owner's wishes. This car features a plethora of special parts and components, principal among them is the full Alfaholics aluminum GTA body, subtly reworked and finished to a very high standard. Affixed to the body is their competition derived fast road/ trackday suspension system with adjustable aluminum dampers, 2 ¼" springs, aluminum race T bar, lightweight crossmembers and titanium hardware. Beneath the bonnet sits a Monza Big Valve Twin Spark engine; nearly as pretty to look at as it sounds. It breathes through optional 45mm Weber carburetors, and a full custom exhaust, and features 3D mapped electronic ignition, and Alfaholics-uprated internals. It is understood to make at least 200bhp, with similar engines easily topping 240bhp. Power is laid to the ground via a 5-speed gearbox and limited slip differential, all developed in-house. Six-pot front and billet rear calipers help bring it all to a halt.
Beyond the performance, Alfaholics ensure the GTA-R a fantastic place to spend the day exploring back roads. Chassis 009 features niceties like power steering and air conditioning, and the deep bucket seats are covered in lovely red leather. Black Alcantara is used on the dash and console, beautiful Wilton wool carpets line the floors, and an Autodelta roll bar is fitted for stiffness and safety. Pleasing touches include a period Motorola radio with modern internals, a lovely wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel, and restored Jaeger instruments.
Alfaholics currently claim a long waiting list for the GTA-R, as each car takes approximately 3, 000 hours to complete. Such are their endearing qualities, they rarely appear on the open market, making this an exceedingly rare opportunity to skip the wait and find out for yourself why the designer of the McLaren F1, Gordan Murray, had to have one in his garage.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams|Cars website for all pertinent auction information.
