Description
The 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider 1600 represents the latest evolution in a line that began with the Giulietta Spider in 1955. Designed by Pininfarina, this Tipo 101 series embodied Italian sporting elegance. In 1962, the Giulietta became the Giulia: the small 1300 engine was replaced by a 1600 cm³ twin-cam engine derived from the Giulia TI saloon, producing 92 bhp in the standard version and up to 112 bhp for the Veloce. The gearbox was upgraded to five speeds, which was a rarity at the time, and performance was improved, with a top speed of around 175 km/ h. From 1963, the Giulia Spider adopted front disc brakes, an important development that improved safety and braking efficiency. This mixed system - discs at the front, drums at the rear - remained simple but effective, perfectly suited to the vehicle's low weight and sporting pretensions. This technical improvement, coupled with precise steering and a well-balanced chassis, made the car pleasant and agile, both on winding roads and on the motorway. The end-of-production models in 1965 benefited from all the improvements accumulated since the model's launch: accomplished powertrains, a tried and tested braking system, a well-spaced gearbox, and a stabilised quality of finish. They also retained the pure, classic lines designed by Pininfarina, before the style was radically changed with the arrival of the Duetto in 1966. Produced in small numbers, these latest Spider Tipo 101s combine the elegance of the original design with superior reliability and a more modern driving experience. Today, they are highly sought-after by connoisseurs as the perfect synthesis of traditional craftsmanship and technical maturity. The model presented is in very good overall condition and is of American origin. It was produced on 18/ 11/ 1964 and registered new on 16/ 4/ 1965. Imported into Belgium in 1992 and fully restored by 2012, it is in perfect condition, both mechanically and in terms of bodywork and upholstery. The soft top is in good condition.
