Lot 504

c. 1967 Ducati 160cc Monza Junior
Registration no. Unregistered (see text)
Frame no. 16226
Engine no. DM160 23626

Designed by Fabio Taglioni, the first Ducati overhead-camshaft single - the 100 Gran Sport - appeared on the racetrack in 1954 and soon proved unbeatable in its class. Taglioni's versatile design proved capable of considerable enlargement, being produced in various capacities up to 450cc. A downsized version of Ducati's 250cc Monza, whose chassis it retained, the exquisite Monza Junior was introduced in 1964 and, like its larger brother, was powered by the proven single-overhead-camshaft engine, in this case based on the contemporary 125. A four-speed gearbox was fitted and the diminutive Junior could top 70mph, while 100mpg was achievable when ridden with restraint. Production ceased in 1967, though some dealers were still clearing stocks a year or two later. Lightweight, nimble, sure-footed and possessing a gem of an engine that sounds glorious when 'on the cam', these little Dukes are a delight to ride.

Nothing is known of the history of this particular Ducati Monza Junior, which has a km/ h speedometer with an odometer reading of 15, 089 kilometres (9, 376 miles). There is no documentation with this motorcycle apart from the attached tax disc (issued in Bradford) which expired on 30th June 1975. It should be noted that the displayed registration 'MLL 29L' is not recorded in the HPI/ DVLA database and therefore the machine is sold unregistered. A potentially most rewarding project, this charming Monza Junior is offered for recommissioning or possible more extensive restoration before further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed (the engine turns over).

£800 - 1, 200

All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
