Description
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at Supercar Fest 2026 on Saturday the 16th of May, Sywell Aerodrome, Sywell, Northampton, NN6 0BN. The introduction of the Series III in 1971 ushered in further refinements to the stout and sturdy concept launched in 1948 and marked the final evolution of the original leaf-sprung Land Rover. Notable improvements over the outgoing Series II and IIA included a higher compression version of the venerable 2. 25-litre petrol engine mated to a gearbox that now benefitted from synchromesh on all four gears. The Series III uses a hydraulic slave cylinder operating directly on the clutch fork, whereas the Series II used a more complex mechanical linkage and vertical cylinder set-up. It also saw the advent of a more driver-oriented dashboard surrounded by a moulded plastic fascia with driver-facing gauges, whilst the exterior also received further refinements with the introduction of it’s well recognised plastic ABS grille.
This right-hand drive, home-market example was first registered on 16th March 1979. Purchased by our vendor in 2024, the Land Rover and has evidently been painstakingly restored. Most notably a new galvanised chassis, supplied by specialists Richards Chassis of Swinton, and a Robert Owens bulkhead were used to form the backbone of this extensive restoration. We are also informed that the engine, running gear and brakes were rebuilt.
Beautifully finished in Pastel Green with Limestone wheels, it’s currently fitted with a full canvas tilt and under-bonnet Smiths heater for comfortable winter motoring. The interior features black vinyl seating with more modern style safety belts, rubber flooring and interior-mounted spare wheel and tyre. Sound-proofing has been subtly fitted where necessary under the bonnet to help lower the ‘on the move decibels’ and the dashboard has been wrapped in leather. Only sparingly used since the completion of the restoration, this exceptional Series III starts on the button and is ready to be enjoyed.
The 88" Series III Land Rover is a remarkable British classic with a back to basics charm, easy to work on, frugal to maintain and good fun to drive on or off-road and we invite and encourage your viewing of this exceptional example to fully appreciate the quality on offer.
