Description

The Fiat 521C sits in an interesting space.

Its neither a high-performance thoroughbred nor a basic utilitarian car, but something more subtle: a well-engineered, upper-middle-class European tourer from the late 1920s.

While the Fiat 521 range was produced in reasonable numbers for its time, with just over 33, 000 examples built between 1928 and 1931, the survival rate today is exceptionally low. Like many pre-war cars of this type, the vast majority were used extensively, repurposed, or simply lost over time.

The 521C “Corto” variant is notably less common than the standard long-wheelbase models, and surviving examples, particularly those retaining their original character or presented in restored condition are seldom seen on the market. Each car is further distinguished by its coachwork, as many were bodied individually, making no two examples exactly alike.

As a result, the Fiat 521C occupies a unique position: not rare due to limited production, but rare today due to attrition, age, and individuality. It is this combination that gives the model its quiet appeal, an uncommon and distinctive pre-war motorcar that stands apart from more frequently encountered marques of the era.

And here's a rare opportunity to acquire one, the short-wheelbase “Corto” variant of Fiat’s refined late-1920s six-cylinder range. An appealing and usable entry into pre-war motoring, ideal for enthusiasts seeking something distinctive yet approachable.

ABOUT THIS CAR

Powered by a smooth and reliable 2. 5-litre inline-six engine paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox, the 521C was designed as a capable and comfortable touring car.
The shorter wheelbase gives it a slightly more responsive feel than its longer counterparts, while still retaining the composed, effortless driving character typical of the era.
This car presents with classic pre-war proportions; long bonnet, upright radiator, and flowing guards, delivering a timeless and understated elegance.
The interior is in keeping with its period, featuring quality materials and a warm, traditional finish.
This example is well suited to relaxed touring, vintage rallies, or display, offering an authentic pre-war driving experience defined by smoothness and mechanical charm rather than outright performance.
A thoughtful addition to any collection, the Fiat 521C represents a more understated and intelligent choice within the pre-war market valued for its engineering integrity, usability, and period character.
This car is beautiful. Clean body with just gorgeous paintwork, chrome and finishing.
 The interior is perfect.
Car is easy to start and drive and runs like a Swiss watch.
When these Fiat's were road tested new, they were highly praised because they had all the top gear ability of the most expensive, and higher powered American cars; for the beautiful finish and for the economy in petrol that British manufacturers aimed for. These Fiats embodied the best points in British and American cars and performed like a Rolls Royce.

HISTORY

This Fiat 521C, along with one other 521C was sold by W. J. P McCulloch, Cumberland Street, Dunedin (the Fiat Distributor at this time). Interestingly, both vehicles ended up in Timaru. The last owners purchased this restored vehicle from Timaru in May 2018. The owner previous to last, owned this vehicle since 1949 when he was only 14 years old. He sold it soon after and didn't see it for 53 years when he purchased it back in 2002. Following extensive research and inquiries, he located the car, stored it in a fruit packing shed in Roxburgh. It was remarkably complete but in bad shape. It took him five years to complete the restoration from top to toe. Once completed, the vehicle was registered and warranted on the 14th of February 2007. It took part in a South Island tour soon after. This vehicle is today in restored, original condition; the only modifications being the additions of a conventional oil filter, air cleaner, temperature gauge, fuel shut off solenoid, battery isolator, and indicators.

VALUES & MARKET POSITIONING

In today’s market, the Fiat 521C sits within the more accessible end of the pre-war collector spectrum, with typical values generally ranging between NZD50, 000 and NZD85, 000 depending on condition, provenance, and coachwork.

While the broader classic car market has shown long-term growth, appreciation in the pre-war segment has been more modest and selective, with values driven primarily by rarity, originality, and presentation rather than speculation.

Cars of this era tend to attract knowledgeable enthusiasts rather than investors, and while they may not experience the rapid value increases seen in later “blue-chip” classics, they offer stability, intrinsic historical value, and steady long-term interest. As such, the 521C represents an appealing proposition, less about short-term gain, and more about ownership of a distinctive and increasingly uncommon piece of motoring history.

A beautiful piece indeed in STUNNING CONDITION.
