Classic Car Design presents this rare and iconic Ford Thunderbird from 1956. The model was born in 1955, not claiming to rival pure sports cars, it positions itself as a competitor to the Chevrolet Corvette. At that time, each year the styling changed; 1956 is the only model year in which the car is equipped with the continental kit and the famous porthole on the sides of the hardtop.
Externally, the blue hue leaning towards turquoise irresistibly catches the eye and suits this compact convertible perfectly, a quintessential symbol of the Fifties complemented by the large whitewall tyres. Although one generally prefers to cruise in a Thunderbird with hair in the wind or with the hardtop, the hood is present (not always the case) and folds completely behind the seats. The body is in very good overall condition with a few minor flaws. The sills show no signs of corrosion. All accessories, badges and hubcaps are present and in good condition; only the bumpers show some wear due to time.
Inside, the cabin mirrors the exterior with the blue and white duo, generally in good condition with no stains or tears; this strict two-seater already offers an electrically adjustable bench seat, the windows are also electric. The passengers face a well‑appointed dashboard typical of American production where pressed metal, chrome, vinyl and body colour meet.
Mechanically, it’s the 312ci V8 at work under the hood paired to the Ford-O-Matic 3-speed gearbox. It purrs like a big cat and drives the Thunderbird with ease, the controls are very smooth: power steering and power-assisted brakes. The whole package makes for a very comfortable and smooth drive.
The Thunderbird is a historic model firmly anchored in American automotive culture. The overall condition of this example allows immediate and confident planning of pleasant trips on secondary roads. If you are into classic car gatherings, there is little chance you’ll see another one, as the model is rare in France.
