Description

The Volvo Amazon was launched as the successor to the successful Volvo PV and was significantly more modern in comparison. The Amazon was launched in October 1961 as a two-door version. However, a five-door station wagon version of the car was also launched in 1962.
The name Amazon was only used in the Nordic market. This was because the name was already taken abroad by the German motorcycle and moped manufacturer Kreidler.
Abroad, the Amazon is instead better known as the Volvo 121/ 122S/ 123GT, which was also on the emblems on the front fenders of the cars sold in Sweden.
During the 1960s, the Amazon was Volvo's number 1 volume car and achieved great export success worldwide.
During the 1960s, the Amazon was Volvo's number 1 volume car and achieved great export success worldwide. In 1966, Volvo launched its successor: the Volvo 140, but the Amazon continued to be manufactured until 1970, that because of its great demand and popularity worldwide.
In the mid-1960s, demand for a sportier version of Volvo's Amazon increased. To meet this demand, Volvo launched a GT version of the 120 series.
The new model was called "Volvo 123 GT" and was equipped with Volvo's B18B engine and associated overdrive. The car then had a total output of 115hp.
In addition to this, the car received an extensive range of special equipment. The most distinctive feature of the Volvo 123GT was probably the characteristic round exterior mirrors mounted above the wheel arches.
But also the sporty tachometer from "Smiths" that was mounted on top of the dashboard. Volvo's 123GT was mainly produced between 1967-1968.
There are also a few 123GTs produced in 1969 and 1970. Due to its rarity, Volvo's 123GT is today considered the "holy grail" among the Amazons, making them highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

We can now present a really nice example of Volvo's sought-after 123GT, painted in Cherry Red (#46) and upholstered seats in black (#417-515). This car was sold new on November 14, 1966 to electrician Eddie Larsson, residing in Nynäshamn, right outside of Stockholm.
Eddie then sold the car to a gentleman in Enskede, a few miles away. Since then, the car has lived most of its life in the Stockholm area. In the early 90s, this 123GT was retired and fell into oblivion for several years.
In 2008, the car was found alone and abandoned and was purchased by one of Sweden's most renowned Volvo Amazon enthusiasts and restorers. He carefully and professionally restored the car to its former glory.

In terms of the engine, the car runs fantastically well and is incredibly fun to drive. Do not miss the chance to become the owner of a real Swedish rarity.
