1972 LEYLAND REDLINE 550 FG FLATBEDThe 1972 Leyland Redline 550 FG is a classic light commercial vehicle famed for its distinctive 'threepenny bit' cab design. Originally a British Motor Corporation (BMC) product, it became part of the Leyland Redline range following the 1968 merger. The '550' designation refers to its 5. 5-ton gross vehicle weight, placing it in the light truck category. Famous for its 'angled' cab with small windows below the main windscreen, designed to help drivers see the kerb and pedestrians while maneuvering. Commonly powered by a 2. 2-litre diesel engine, though other variants like the 3. 8-litre BMC diesel were also used in the FG range. By 1972, this chassis was used for a vast range of body types, including delivery vans, heavily used by brands like Sunblest for bread deliveries. Configured as ambulances, mobile libraries, and even small buses for 22–24 passengers but most common as flatbeds, dropsides, and recovery trucks. The FG series was a staple of British roads throughout the 1960s and 70s. While it offered innovative visibility for urban driving, it was eventually outclassed by more comfortable foreign imports like Volvo and the maturing Ford Transit. Today it is a popular choice for restoration enthusiasts and classic truck collectors. This older restored 550 FG has a 3993cc six-cylinder petrol engine noted for having a 'sweet sound.'The vehicle starts drives and stops without fault. Benefiting from having had a new timber flatbed- the underside of the vehicle is in remarkably good condition throughout. Whilst the bed drop-sides paintwork is showing a few signs of aging, the paintwork is in very presentable condition throughout. The cab is extremely smart as per the photos and this vehicle has won rosettes at various classic vehicle shows. Perfect as a Showman's Lorry, this has to be one of the better Leyland Redline 550s out there. It is thought that only 20 such examples remain in the UK and as such, this is a rare opportunity to purchase an early 1970s commercial workhorse in fine working order and extremely presentable condition and ready for use.
