Abarth 850 TC of 1961 established itself as a small sports car, perfect for everyday use as well as circuit racing. Carlo Abarth transformed a family car like the Fiat 600 into a racing beast which, through its numerous victories, definitively exalted the Torino workshop’s name in the pantheon of motor sport.
The Abarth 850 TC proved to be one of the most fortunate transformations in Carlo Abarth’s career. Introduced in February 1961, the 850 TC returned to the mechanical layout of the Fiat 600 D: hence the four-cylinder engine of 767 cm3, with bore (62. 5 mm) and stroke (69 mm) increased, giving a displacement up to 847 cm3. The adoption of new pistons favoured the compression ratio, which reached 9. 2:1. Also the most performant camshaft, the 32 Solex carburettor, as well as a new air filter, a different crankshaft and an exhaust designed for sporting use. All this enabled the 850 TC to reach a top speed of 140 km/ h, not bad for a lightweight of the time. Consequently, a new braking system was necessary, with discs replacing drums on the front wheels. In the face of so much sportiness, the interior of the Abarth 850 TC was characterised by the elegant Jaeger instruments and the three-spoke aluminium sports steering wheel.
Carlo Abarth created the perfect weapon for competition: the Abarth 850 TC. The on-track successes soon arrived; the small Abarth cars triumphed in gruelling endurance races, and the victories of the 850 TC were soon surpassed by its evolutions, such as the 1000 TC and the Radiale. One of the most famous feats is the 500-kilometre race of 1961, held on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring in Germany. To celebrate this milestone, a special series was produced named the “Fiat Abarth 850 TC Nürburgring”.
