1949 Allard L-Type Tourer  – One of Just 13 Known Roadworthy Examples in the UK

One of the rarest post-war British sporting tourers, this 1949 Allard L-Type is a remarkably scarce survivor and an exciting new arrival at The Garage.

Just 191 L-Types were built between 1946 and 1950 and, according to the Allard Owners Club, only around 13 roadworthy examples are currently known to remain on the road in the United Kingdom. With fewer than 40 believed to survive worldwide, opportunities to acquire an L-Type are exceptionally rare.

Finished in attractive period style and powered by the famous Ford V8 engine, the L-Type perfectly captures the spirit of Sydney Allard's post-war sporting cars. Combining independent front suspension, lightweight construction and effortless V8 performance, these charismatic machines offered a unique blend of touring comfort and competition pedigree. The formula would later inspire many other British and American sports car manufacturers, including Carroll Shelby, who openly acknowledged Sydney Allard's influence on the Cobra.

The L-Type was introduced in 1946 as a practical four-seat sporting tourer, featuring a chassis six inches longer than the contemporary K-Type. Unlike many sporting cars of the period, it provided genuine accommodation for four adults while retaining the strong performance and character for which Allard became renowned.

Registered UMC 486, this example has had just five owners from new and benefits from a long history of careful ownership and maintenance. Restored during the 1990s, it has covered only minimal mileage since completion and remains presented in very good order throughout.

The current owner has continued to improve and maintain the car during their long-term ownership, which dates from 2010. Works undertaken include a steering overhaul using a reconditioned Marles steering box, new track rod ends, upgraded fuel and ignition systems incorporating a Stromberg carburettor, Mallory distributor, Pertronix electronic ignition and Malpassi fuel regulator/ filter. The stainless steel exhaust system further enhances reliability and usability.

More recently, the weather equipment has been professionally refurbished, including the hood and side screens, ensuring the car remains practical for touring and regular enjoyment.

A former concours entrant at the Vintage Nostalgia meeting at Shelsley Walsh, the Allard has been enjoyed as intended, with regular touring through the Welsh borders and Black Mountains rather than being confined to storage.

Equally at home on country roads, long-distance touring events and historic motoring gatherings, the L-Type offers a wonderfully versatile ownership proposition. With seating for four, effortless V8 performance and extraordinary rarity, it is a car capable of turning heads wherever it appears.

The history file includes a quantity of invoices, an old-style logbook, expired MOT certificates and its current V5C Registration Certificate.

More photographs and a video will be uploaded when the car arrives.
