Thanks in no small part to its enormous rallying success, the Quattro popularised all-wheel drive, and is now regarded as one of the most influential and important sports cars of the 1980s. The brainchild of Jörg Bensinger, an Audi chassis engineer, development work was started in 1977. Three years later the finished product was released. Although the floorpan had much in common with the 80 and the running gear was largely taken from an Audi 200, the Quattro used a manual centre differential lock (operated by levers next to the handbrake) to govern the 197bhp and 210lb ft power outputs delivered by the 2. 1-litre in-line five cylinder turbocharged engine. By the time this particular car arrived, the crude cable-operated 50:50 split differential had been replaced with a much more advanced Torsen (torque sensing) diff and the engine had been uprated with double overhead camshafts and a larger 2, 226cc capacity, upping power to 217bhp. Regarded by many as the best of the Quattros, the 20 Valve now represents a great potential investment opportunity. Back in 1990 when this Audi Quattro 20V was built, the model was already legendary thanks to its early 1980s dominance of the competitive rally scene. Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist, Walter Röhrl and others delivered two World Rally Championship (WRC) wins and 23 major rally victories, and ensured posters of this motoring icon would adorn teenage boys’ bedrooms throughout the 1980s and ’90s. The road-going model, these days often known as the Ur (or ‘original’) Quattro, had by 1991 morphed into its most potent form. The 2, 226cc inline five-cylinder double overhead cam ‘RR’ engine had gained four valves per cylinder in 1989, generating a healthy 217hp. The Quattro’s famous continuous four-wheel drive, five-speed transaxle and independent front and rear suspension helped put this power down on the road, enabling a top speed of 143mph and 0-60mph in a blistering 6. 5 seconds. Even the turbo, once a weakness, had been uprated with a water-cooled version to improve reliability. We are indebted to the vendor for the following summary of the car’s history. “In 1988 I started as an apprentice at a Volkswagen Audi dealer in Darlington, it was there that was I first introduced to the Quattro. From that point on it was the car I desired. Fast forward to 2006, and I could finally afford one so I started searching and travelled many miles inspecting and test driving potential candidates, and finally in 2007, there was a 20v advertised in the news letter for the Quattro owners club. The car had covered just under 100, 000, miles but was described as being an outstanding example. I travelled to Leicestershire to inspect the car and found it was as advertised and by far the best I had seen, with excellent history and featured in an Audi press magazine article, A Decade of the Audi Quattro, an article written following a test conducted by none other than Jeremy Clarkson. Following my purchase I gave it a thorough inspection finding it in excellent order, and in original condition. Obviously it had been locked after correctly. The only issue that concerned me was the Tornado Red paint work had gone a little milky (a very common issue) so I decided to have a full professional respray carried out in 2007. Since the car has been in my ownership it has only be out in the rain once (at a Ur Quattro owners club meet) and has always been garaged under a custom fleece cover. It has always been serviced regularly, even though at times it has covered less than 100 miles between services. In 2025 it had a full service including all the fluids being changed and flushed out, the brakes stripped, cleaned and lubed and the cambelt, water pump, relay roller and vee belts replaced, In 2026 it has had 4 new correct size Pirelli tyres fitted. For its age and in my opinion it’s in excellent order, even the electric aerial works which many don’t. Being critical it has a very small dent on the bonnet and has slight corrosion appearing on the sunroof panel under the paint on the drivers side. Apart from that nothing aside from very...
