A car whose heady blend of styling and performance were so exceptional at its 1961 Geneva Motor Show launch they continue to cast a smooth, elliptical shadow over the marque’s new sports cars some 65 years later! Its Malcolm Sayer-penned lines are thought by many to be among the most striking ever to adorn a motor car. Indeed, the Daily Telegraph ranked the E-Type top of the ‘100 most beautiful cars of all time’ and, of course, none other than Enzo Ferrari beat them to it by many years when he reputedly described it as `the most beautiful car ever made’. Like the XK150 before it, it was born of Jaguar’s competition successes on the race tracks of Europe. Make no mistake, this was no ordinary motorcar—it was a true thoroughbred. Allied to a monocoque passenger cell, the model’s tubular front sub-frame cradled a 3, 781cc DOHC straight-six engine, independent torsion-bar suspension and rack and pinion steering, while its back axle played host to a sophisticated coil-sprung set-up complete with inboard disc brakes. From birth, the E-Type was available either as a Fixed Head Coupé or a two-seat Roadster. Among the very fastest cars of its generation, contemporary road tests found the newcomer to be capable of 0-60 mph in circa 7 seconds and 150mph. Despite this, engine size was increased from 3. 8 to 4. 2 litres in October, 1964, and, with the change came a sweeter all-synchromesh gearbox, better brakes and electrical systems, plus more comfortable seats. A mere 863 right-hand drive E-Type Series I 4. 2 Roadsters were made prior to the introduction of the so-called Series 1. 5 cars in September 1967. As beautiful today as it was when it left the factory more than sixty years ago, this rare right-hand drive, home-market E-type 4. 2 Roadster was built on May 25th, 1965, and was despatched on June 14th to Henlys of London, on Piccadilly. All information concerning the car’s early particulars are described on the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate included in the sale. According to the V5C, it has had only four keepers from new, which would suggest that the 52, 200 miles on the odometer may be original. It was purchased by the previous owner in 2018, and he covered 1, 209 miles in his ownership, kept an itemised log of maintenance and stored the car in a heated garage, prior to selling it to the Fox Collection in 2023, where it has remained on mostly static display. The maintenance log begins in October, 2018, at 51, 007 miles, when the underfloor area was Waxoyled and the car was freshly greased, before going into winter storage. After minimal mileage, in November, 2019, the Jaguar was placed back inside a humidified storage tent for winter, and in February, 2020, a leak from the fuel pump was identified, so it was immediately serviced and refitted without the leak. The oil and filter were replaced at the same time, and in April, at 51, 500 miles, the brake master cylinder was discovered to be sticking, so it was removed, serviced and replaced, which was naturally followed by the supply of new brake fluid. In August, 2020, at 52, 007 miles, the gearbox oil was replaced with MT90, and the differential oil was replaced with Penrite 80/ 90. In June, 2021, at 52, 100 miles, the engine oil was renewed Halfords Classic 20/ 50, plus a new filter, and the front wheel bearings were serviced. Thereafter, the car remained virtually static, but nevertheless received another engine oil change in June, 2022, prior to its sale in 2023. They, of course, were only some of the minor jobs. Other work the E-type has received in the not-too-distant past has included the reupholstering of the interior with new Black Connolly leather and Wilton carpets (Black being the original colour). The radio appears standard but has been upgraded with Bluetooth connectivity, and the original steering wheel has been replaced with a popular Moto-Lita item of smaller diameter. The E-type has been repainted at some stage and the condition of the chrome certainly suggests that it has been replated fairly recently. “Virtually new” Pirelli P4000 Super Touring tyres were fitted at the time of the sale in 2023. The engine bay has been described as “spotless” and the engine itself as “on the button.” Of course, having spent the last three years as a static display piece, the E-type will now require light recommissioning before it can be used on the road, but after such...
