Alec Issigonis, who had been working for Alvis, was recruited by the head of BMC Leonard Lord to design a technically advanced family car to complement their existing conventional models. Its space-saving transverse engine, integrated sump transmission and front wheel drive allowed 80% of the car’s floorpan to be used for passengers and luggage, influencing a generation of future car designers. The production version of the Mini was demonstrated to the press in April 1959, and by August, several thousand cars had been produced ready for dispatch to the dealers. An immediate hit, it’s arguably one of the most influential British cars ever produced, and its model name has become the generic term for small cars. Famous racing car designer John Cooper had taken an early 850 model to Monza in 1959 and offered his old rival, Fiat and ex-Ferrari engineer Aurelio Lampredi, a quick test drive. Returning several hours later, he heralded it as the future of automotive design, although he was not too complimentary about its looks! Seeing the cars’ competition potential, Cooper harassed Issigonis and BMC until they agreed to build a ‘hot’ version. Initially conceived as a homologation special, the Mini Cooper was launched in July 1961, powered by an enlarged 997cc engine with twin SU carbs and benefiting from disc front brakes. A more powerful version, dubbed the ” Cooper S”, was released in 1963, featuring a productionised version of the 1071cc Formula Junior race unit that Morris Engines had developed primarily for competition use. In a giant killing act that has gone down in motorsport history, Paddy Hopkirk famously won the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally against far more powerful cars. In a story that will resonate with many, the vendor of this car had a Mini 850 when younger and always aspired to own a ‘Cooper S’. Seeing a restored 1964 model advertised, he bought the car but was not happy with some of the work, so he commenced what became a full strip out and respray to his own more exacting standards. It will be supplied with an extensive paperwork file of old MOTS, photographs and many receipts documenting both restorations, together with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust dating certificate. This states it was built on the 23rd June 1964 on body number A. 028285, finished in its current colours of Tartan Red with a Black roof and Red and Gold/ Grey interior trim. It was dispatched to McLay’s garage in Kirkintilloch with a fresh air heater, 4. 5” wheel rims, 3. 44:1 final drive ratios and a close ratio gearbox. A stunning example of the rarest iteration of the legendary Cooper S, presented in beautiful running condition. It will be supplied with the aforementioned paperwork file together with a current V5C. . ** Bidding will take place live at the venue, online via our H&H website, by telephone and commission - T&Cs apply** Entry by catalogue and can be purchased for £20 (admits 2...
