The star of the 1952 London Motor Show, the ‘Big Healey’ would enjoy fantastic success and steady development, with the early four-cylinder cars giving way to the 100-Six in 1956, which in turn was replaced by the first of the 3000s in 1959. By now the engine capacity of its straight-six had risen to 2912cc and the power output to 124bhp – sufficient to grace a standard car with a 0-60mph time of 11. 4 seconds and a top speed of around 114mph. There was also the option of Laycock de Normanville overdrive for the four-speed gearbox and braking had been improved by the adoption of discs at the front. There were two body options available – a two-seater (BN7) or an occasional four-seater (BT7). By the time the MkI 3000 was superseded by the MkII in 1961, a total of 2, 825 BN7s and 10, 825 BT7s had been produced.
A highly desirable early ‘Big Healey’, this Austin Healey 3000 MkI BT7 was originally supplied new to St. Louis, Missouri as a left-hand drive 2+2 example, factory specified with a particularly attractive combination of wire wheels, overdrive, heater, laminated windscreen and performance tyres.
Re-imported to the UK in 2004, the Healey subsequently benefited from a comprehensive, body-off restoration by marque specialists JME Healeys, during which it was professionally converted to right-hand drive. The quality of the restoration remains readily apparent today having completed less than 400 miles since, with the car presenting in excellent condition throughout. Its exceptional cosmetic and mechanical condition is undoubtedly aided by careful ownership, having been stored in a dehumidified garage for the past fourteen years. Described as being an on-the-button example, the car is reported to offer the engaging performance and touring capability for which the 3000 MkI is so highly regarded. Enhancing its versatility further still, the Healey is accompanied by a matching hardtop and side screens, making it equally suited to open-air motoring or more inclement weather.
Offered for sale with a Brittish Motor Heritage Industry Heritage Trust certificate and current V5C to add to an attractive factory specification, comprehensive restoration and exemplary presentation, this BT7 represents an appealing opportunity to acquire one of Britain’s most iconic sporting motor cars.
