Arguably the most cost-effective route into Phantom VI ownership
Said to run and drive well at the point the car was damaged
Unrecorded and HPI Clear
Introduced in 1959, Rolls-Royce’s new limousine model, the long-wheelbase Phantom V, effectively replaced both the Phantom IV and the Silver Wraith. Built on a much modified and strengthened Silver Cloud II chassis, the new Phantom measured over 6 metres in length and enabled coachbuilders to combine the desirable qualities of spacious interior accommodation with generous boot space and graceful lines. A lower final drive ratio ensured that, while top speed was a little down on that of its stablemates, though still in excess of 100mph, the new Phantom could all but match them for acceleration.
With so few produced and with such a serious price tag, the Rolls-Royce Phantoms of 1959 to 1991 were made for a very special type of customer. Being a Head of State seemed a prerequisite for owning a Phantom. HM Queen Elizabeth II had a Phantom V, and her mother owned one as well. A Phantom VI State Limousine was presented to The Queen in 1978 for her Silver Jubilee by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and is still in service today.
This rather sad looking Phantom VI was delivered new to the Mecca Sportsman Company, later ‘London Clubs Ltd’ and is believed to have been used for chauffeuring the elite during these early years. Sold via agents Jack Barclay, it was specified in the striking combination of Deep Indigo with a blue / beige quilted cloth interior. Optional extras at the time included fog lamps, front seat belts, Sundym glass, extended chrome waist mouldings, stainless steel rims around the wheel arches, plus adjustable reading lamps to the rear compartment.
Said to have been running and driving at the time of an unfortunate incident where a barn roof fell on to the car – a new owner is now faced with various possibilities. Repair and restore the car to its former glory, or remove the damaged roof and create a large open Landaulette / Cabriolet, ideal for warmer climates. Spare parts are seemingly readily available and a quick search online resulted in replacement wings showing as available from two separate specialists. Offered with a UK V5c document, clear HPI report, copies of the period order, spec sheets and correspondence.
