Description
1935 Fiat Balilla 508 Sport. The Metcalfe Car.
This is without doubt, the most documented Fiat Balilla in existence.
Continuous history from 1935 including first ownership by MI 5 Double Agent Christopher Le Strange Metcalfe ('Dickie') who worked under Guy Lidddell and codenamed 'Balloon'.
The little Fiat was owned by Metcalfe for the first 20 years of it's life, during which time it clocked up over 25 first place wins in the UK with numerous second and third placements.
Racecards with the car include Brooklands pre-war and photographs of the car on track at Boreham with none other than Mike Hawthorn alongside!
History with the car includes many period photographs and an Autocar magazine feature from 1952 'Balilla With a Dosier'.
CMG 99 found it's way to Italy where we bought it in 2015. The engine was fully rebuilt by DTR and the honeycomb original radiator restored.
Supplied with the car is a hood frame, windscreen and wiper assembly for those wet Mille Miglia days and a host of original 508S parts.
Also, the original photographed air intake scoop (not currently fitted) which was given to Metcalfe by Cyril Wilkinson (of Brooklands) and orignated from a Tiger Moth!
Unique opportunity to buy a fun car with amazing documented history. Elegible for most prestigious events and with a supporting letter from Goodwood welcoming the car.
Make no mistake, these diminutive Fiats are a proper sports car and drive beautifully.
