Honda CRX 1. 6 VTEC, 1991. One owner, 51, 349 km, service books from new.
Remember how Honda, in the early '90s, briefly knocked the glasses off the establishment? While the Germans were still calculating how much torque you could squeeze out of an engine, something came out of Japan that turned the whole thing on its head. VTEC. Variable valve timing, where the engine suddenly switches character at a certain rev point, from calm commuter to something else entirely. You potter through town, then you nudge the needle towards the red zone and something happens. A second personality wakes up. From tidy office clerk to an excitable young pup straining at the leash.
I have always thought of it as one of the finest pieces of engineering wit from that era. No turbo that first has to think about things, no heavy artillery, just cleverness. And the beauty of it: that 1. 6 litre keeps spinning into territory where many engines from that time would long since have retired. A crescendo you would normally need a season ticket to the Royal Albert Hall to hear.
The CRX was the playful two-door based on the Civic, but lower, shorter and infinitely more enthusiastic. The generation in front of you is the last proper one, the EE8 with that cheeky profile and the double rear window. A car you do not buy to impress the neighbours, but to find an empty B-road on a quiet Sunday morning and let the VTEC engine do its thing. Pure, light, direct. Real driving, the way it was meant to be.
The story continues on our website, where the full file is kept as well. 113 photographs including the underside. The service history, scanned in full. Paint thickness measured panel by panel. A timeline from 24 September 1991 to today, with every owner and the mileage year by year in a single graph.
