BSA B25 250cc unit-single engine, Joe Maxwell’s preferred specification for his trials builds
A beautifully presented modern interpretation of the rare 1970s CCM trials machine
CCM’s trials machine represents one of the more unusual chapters in the history of Alan Clews’ celebrated Bolton concern. Better known for its highly successful four-stroke motocross machinery, CCM also turned its attention to observed trials during the 1970s. Introduced in 1977, the resulting machine applied the company’s familiar philosophy of lightweight construction and BSA-derived four-stroke power to the very different demands of trials competition. Approximately 110 examples of the original model are understood to have been produced.
Dumfriesshire engineer Joe Maxwell subsequently became one of the specialists most closely associated with the BSA-engined CCMs. A successful motocross competitor himself, Maxwell knew CCM works rider Mike Barnes and his mechanic John Bethell, connections which ultimately led to his meeting CCM founder Alan Clews. Maxwell later stated that Clews personally gave him permission to reproduce any of the BSA-engined CCM models and that he believed himself to be the only person afforded that privilege.
Maxwell’s involvement with the trials model began when an original 1977 CCM was brought into his workshop for repair. So impressed was he by what he described as a “beautiful wee bike” that he subsequently began producing his own frame kits based upon the original. By the time his workshop was featured in the August 2025 edition of Classic Bike Magazine, Maxwell had produced 17 trials frame kits.
Manufactured from lightweight, high-strength T45 tubing and Nickle plated, the JME frames were designed to accept the BSA B40 unit-single engine. Maxwell, however, stated that his personal preference was always to use the smaller B25 250cc unit, making the specification of the machine offered here particularly appropriate.
Constructed in 2025 around JME frame number JME23151, this example is reported by the vendor as the work of Eddie Bull and is powered by a BSA B25 250cc four-stroke unit-single engine, numbered PE01753 B25S.
A modern construction rather than an original period-built CCM, it nevertheless possesses an interesting connection to the marque through its Joe Maxwell Engineering chassis. Maxwell’s long association with the BSA-engined CCMs, together with Alan Clews’ reported personal authorisation for him to reproduce the machines, sets these JME frame kits apart from a conventional reproduction.
An attractive and unusual interpretation of the rare CCM trials machine, combining a specialist JME chassis with the lighter 250cc BSA power unit specifically favoured by Joe Maxwell himself.
