Velocette motorcycles were manufactured by Veloce Ltd in Hall Green Birmingham between 1905 and 1971, a family-owned firm producing mainly hand-built motorcycles and competing favorably with the bigger concerns such as BSA, Triumph and Norton. Veloce, whilst relatively a small concern, was a great technical innovator and many of its patented designs are commonplace on motorcycles today, including the positive-stop foot shift and swinging arm rear suspension with hydraulic dampers. Renowned for the quality of its products, the company was “always in the picture” in international motorcycle racing from the mid-1920s through to the 1950s, culminating in two 350cc World Championship titles. The first version of the Velocette MAC was launched in 1933 and was developed from the overhead valve Velocette MOV 250. A reliable single-cylinder design, the MAC coped well with the low-grade post-war petrol and was a popular all-rounder amongst motorcyclists in the 1950s.
This MAC, finished in attractive green, has been part of a family’s private collection for a number of years. It has been stood for a number of years, so will need recommissioning before use, but the bike wheels freely and the engine turns over on the kickstarter. The bike is not currently registered, but will be supplied with a photocopy of part of its RF60 buff logbook showing a previous registration number of KDB526. This number no longer appears on DVLA, but the frame number of RS8183 and the engine number MAC24557 shown on the photocopy match the numbers on the bike and may aid future registration. Once recommissioned and registered, it will make an ideal mount for vintage runs and rallies.
