In 2010, Dr Ulrich Bez marked ten years as CEO of Aston Martin. Under him the company had moved to Gaydon, launched the VH platform and become profitable for the first time in its long history. To celebrate, Aston Martin showed a small run of special editions at that year’s Geneva Motor Show, each one specified by Dr Bez himself. The DBS UB-2010 was the most special of them: just 20 coupes and 20 Volantes were built.
The starting point was Marek Reichman’s DBS, the most muscular Aston of its time, with a bonded aluminium chassis, carbon fibre panels and the hand-built 5, 935 cc V12 producing 510 hp and 420 lb-ft. Dr Bez chose a single finish for every car: Azurite Black paint, a deep blue-black that turns navy in the sun, with metallic bronze leather, woven leather inserts and Cryptic Titanium trim across the dashboard and doors. Before each car left the factory, he signed it off personally. His signature is on the UB-2010 sill plaques and on the final inspection plate under the bonnet.
This is coupe No. 07 of 20, and it has covered only delivery mileage since new. Both of Dr Bez’s signed plaques are in place, and the bronze leather and titanium trim look just as Gaydon finished them. It is as close to new as a UB-2010 can be today.
Most limited-edition Astons are about extra power. The UB-2010 is about one man’s personal taste at the end of the naturally aspirated V12 era. With only twenty coupes built, very few come up for sale, and finding one that has never really been driven is rarer still.
