The Birmingham Small Arms factory was established in the Small Heath area of Birmingham in 1861 to manufacture weapons. Around the turn of the century they started making bicycles and progressed to motorcycles a few years later. BSA went on to become one of the world’s largest producers of motorcycles until its demise in the early 1970s. The 654cc unit-construction parallel twins were launched in 1962 with the A65 Star, various improvements being made through the decade. Produced from 1965 to 1972, the A65L Lightning was designed as an all-round sports machine, aimed largely at the American market to complement the more touring-oriented Thunderbolt. A closer-ratio gearbox combined with a higher-lift camshaft made for lively acceleration and performance at higher revs than the standard A65.
Only for sale for health reasons, this wonderful 1971 Lightning was imported from the USA in 2010 with a replacement engine already fitted, and was in single ownership from 2010 to 2022, when it was purchased by our vendor in a somewhat well-worn condition. Our vendor undertook a repaint, an engine overhaul and a full service, after which the BSA was featured in the April, 2023, issue of The Classic Motorcycle. He says, “The bike is an easy starter and is ridden regularly. It rides lovelily and sounds great.”
