The Jaguar XK150 was the third and final stage in the evolution of the XK concept. Described as the car with grace, space, and pace, it was launched in May, 1957, initially with a choice of fixed-head and drophead coupé bodies and was followed nearly a year later by an open two-seater roadster. All cars used the same chassis as the XK140; however, the bodywork was masterfully reworked to give it a much more modern appearance and featured a one-piece curved windscreen for the first time. Internally, the walnut veneered dashboard and door cappings had been replaced with padded leather trim. Although it was mechanically similar to earlier generations, it was clearly much more muscular. One of the main improvements for the XK150 was the fitment of Dunlop disc brakes all-round as opposed to drums which were fitted to the XK140.
The initial XK150s with the 3. 4-litre engine weren’t quite as potent as the proceeding XK140, so in spring, 1958, a new Special Equipment package was offered as an option to improve performance. The SE package included a B-type cylinder head with larger inlet and exhaust valves and larger 1. 75in. SU HD6 carburettors which boosted power in the 3. 4-litre to 210bhp from the ‘standard’ 190bhp.
This handsome XK150 is a desirable specimen, built as a British-market 3. 4-litre Special Equipment model with manual gearbox and overdrive. Manufactured on January 26th, 1959, it was originally painted Mist Grey with Blue upholstery and was despatched on February 9th, retailing through M. J. Hughes Ltd. A copy of the Jaguar Drivers’ Club’s 1986 Register of XKs confirms that this car was by then Blue and belonged to Capt. The Hon. G. Crofton of Chertsey, Surrey.
Now finished in a smart combination of Indigo Blue with Biscuit upholstery, the XK150’s V5C shows five former keepers. In 1997 it was purchased into the Langton family, and was transferred to another family member in 2002, they being the fourth and fifth keepers. In 2016, the car was sold by Autoplay to a Mr. Wheeler, but he appears never to have registered it in his name. Our vendor, an enthusiastic collector who rotates his vehicles regularly, purchased the car in 2025 and has enjoyed it locally.
In 2002, over £12, 000 was spent on an extensive programme of work by Jaguar specialist Derek Watson, including an engine overhaul with new pistons, valves, big-end and main bearings, recut valve seats, a recored radiator and more, while the brakes were overhauled with new cylinders and pads. Further restoration work was undertaken between 2016 and 2018. In addition to another engine overhaul, plus bodywork and trim improvements, the Jaguar received an LED light conversion from 4Sight Automotive. Additional equipment includes a stainless exhaust and electronic ignition. New wire wheels were reportedly fitted about three years ago. The history file includes the V5C, a JDHT certificate, assorted invoices, a service chart, a facsimile copy of an original owner’s manual, an original sales brochure and Jaguar price list, old tax discs, MOTs dating back to 2006, and many invoices.
PLEASE NOTE: The DVLA have incorrectly recorded the chassis number as 824762DW.
