I have been the very proud owner of this vehicle for over two years now in which time it has given me immense joy and satisfaction driving it, looking at it, working on it, having work done on it, or just thinking about it. It was the 'boyhood' dream car and it certainly has lived up to it.
It came with an already enormous history file and when looking through it one can see so much time and effort has been spent on its upkeep throughout the years - and it shows. Anything that needed to be done has been done and the person next in the driving seat so to speak can have that quiet assurance that they've bought a good one.
All the major bits have been done in its lifetime from body work replacement, engine overhaul, subframes, fuel pipes, brakes etc - just looking at a worksheet of James Classic & Vintage Cars of Cranleigh of 2008 it would seem they rebuilt the entire car. It is truly inspirational that people have taken that level of care with this iconic vehicle. Since then however a few bits need tidying with a little bit of bubbling over rear nearside wheel arch and base of rear windscreen but nothing serious. She is not concourse and is thirty years old after all, so there's just a little bit for the new owner to do should he so wish.
I have had the suspension bushes replaced to make the handling what it would have been like out of the factory - and it is. Firm yet very comfortable, the cornering capabilities are incredible for such a big car. The prop shaft has been overhauled in the past 12 months too, the coil replaced, carbon HT Leads which make it ultra reliable, smooth and never misses a beat. There was a problem with the fuel tank switchover but that is fixed, the windows all work, the doors hang nicely as they should, the lighting, new halogen headlights, and all the electrics work with one exception of the heated rear windscreen. All the glass is good with no cracks, chrome excellent, the tyres are good, the exhaust is good. The engine pulls like a train, excellent oil pressure 70lbs psi when hot @ 2500 rpm 40lbs idling @ 750rpm, a real powerhouse with no smoke on running or startup, hot or cold (keep oil at 3/ 4 full).
This 4. 2 fuel injected Sovereign is a dream to drive, very quiet and refined and different to anything else on the road. The six cylinder engine significantly more efficient than the V12/ Double, but stop at a petrol station or somewhere and people comment on how lovely she is and want a little look inside and when driving, people stare from their cars and give the thumbs up!
And inside is a real pleasure too as its the most rare colour combination of blue leather that looks and feels great and the perfect match for the cobalt blue body, and when lit up at night inside and out it seems even more amazing. Seats are very comfortable and in fine condition with a nice patina, no tears, electric seat adjustments work as they should of course.
New Bosch heavy duty battery 12 months ago and good electrics with the alternator delivering exactly the trickle charge it needs to keep it topped up. You can leave this car for months standing - put the key in and she starts first time without complaint. And there's the rub because now she is not used and without a garage its not the best situation. She needs to be driven and appreciated as I have done and now is time she is handed over to the next enthusiast
Fairly high mileage although nobody would ever guess or indeed should have the slightest concern over as these engines are so under stressed. Passed MOT on 2nd Feb 2013 first time, with tester commenting what a nice solid car.
Comes with good stereo radio CD player and the factory electric aerial that works as it should do.
A great classic car for the Series III enthusiast. Make an offer and maybe you too will enjoy a great British classic this summer and you'll be glad you did too.
