In the spring of 1980, a new species started to spread rapidly, at first throughout Italy, but then further across Europe: the Fiat Panda. Giorgetto Giugiaro is the designer of the Italian Volkswagen of the 80s and 90s, which Fiat itself described as its "fantastic treasure chest". From June 1983 the first 4-wheel drive Panda came into existence, developed and built in Graz at Steyr-Puch. Some of these Pandas even contested the Paris-Dakar rally in 1984 and 1985. Based on the Panda were several special editions, and one of the rarest of these marked the transition of the 4x4 from the first to the second series. Only 500 of these were built
This Fiat Panda 4x4 is one of those rare special editions, and may even be the last of its kind! It is still powered by the old series 1 engine which delivers 3 HP more than that of the new series. Inside, this rare Panda features a futuristic vinyl finish, completely in red. It also has red seatbelts and red appliqués on the dashboard and the panels. Externally it comes in a two-coloured form, white on the top and black surrounding side panels below, but also with a black rear window. An attractive decorative stripe stretches along the sides and in the front powerful headlights have been fitted as extras behind protective grilles in the protection bar. Last but not least, a chrome-plated roof rack is fitted above the black vinyl roof. Its condition leaves no reason to doubt the 49. 000 km mileage indicator reading! Fiat used this very Panda to take a leading role in presenting its successor. As early as 1986 the Quattrouote wrote: "Questa Panda integrale è proprio speciale"
