The 'J' Series Midget was to make its first appearance in August 1932 just
prior to the Motor Show of that year. Replacing the 'M' Type, this new model
was available as a two seater (J2) or four seat tourer, or 'Salonette' 2
plus 2 Coupe - these models being the 'J1' and using the 'C' Type chassis.
Following on came a very special addition to the range - a competition model
to replace the 'C' Type. The new 'J4' as it was designated, was powered by a
750cc supercharged engine which produced a very impressive 72 bhp. Larger
brakes were fitted, which were welcomed by the racing fraternity and the car
boasted all the latest developments. When tested at Brooklands, a maximum
speed of over 100 mph was recorded.
Just 9 examples of the J4 were to be built - the high cost of this model (£495) may well have proved to be a limiting factor.
An exceptionally well built replica, this car was built upon the earliest
known J1 chassis (J0257) which was originally fitted with fixed head coupe,
or 'Salonette' bodywork and supplied by University Motors (their enamel
badge is on the dashboard)
The specification is impressive, the engine having been built by 'Triple M' MG guru
Barry Foster, with steel crank and rods, 'C' Type camshaft and Shorrock supercharger.
The car has been campaigned by its former owner - a well known MG specialist
and has a current VSCC Buff Form. An ENV gearbox is fitted and the dashboard
is correctly laid out in the original J4 style. 12" brakes make for
confidence at speed and are fitted with torque reaction cables and in all
aspects, the car is most authentic.
An ideal entry for MG Triple M competition or VSCC events, the car is worthy
of close inspection and comes with a substantial file of documentation. It
retains the original registration number and looks extremely smart in Air
Force Blue with red leather trim.
