Beschreibung
I am feeling my way a bit with this gearbox. I recently bought it not knowing what it would fit. I cleaned it up and in doing so I found 'MD4' along with a number which you can see in one of the pictures. After a lot of searching of bell housing bolt patterns and starter motor positions I have come to the conclusion that this gearbox was made to fit a Meadows four cylinder engine hence the 'MD4'.
I think the Meadows four cylinder bell housings are all the same.
Therefore it appears that this gearbox could be used for historic racing in a Frazer Nash, Lea Francis, Crossley or any other car fitted with the four cylinder Meadows 4ED 1500 cc engine.
As you can see in the pictures the gearbox is not complete. The main problem is that the cast aluminium plate at the bottom of the gearbox is broken into several pieces, most of which I still have as shown in the last picture. I think that someone, years ago, tried to remove the plate to try and see how the gearbox worked. It looks like, if you take all the nuts off, the plate will come off but, of course it won't and you can quite easily snap it by levering it.
As well as that you will see that there are a few other parts missing. What is in the pictures is all that I have.
I think all this happened a very long time ago and the gearbox has been dry stored since. In that time a lot of dirt has got inside. I have cleaned it up as best I can without stripping it down to give an idea of condition. I think it looks pretty good inside. The input and output shafts turn together and feel smooth. The main body looks in very good condition and tidy. There is some deep pitting inside the bell housing but not gone through. I think this could be left as is or built up with weld, whichever is desired.
I have it listed as for parts or not working as you would need to get some used parts to make it complete. I would think that a specialist re-builder would probably be able to make new parts or supply as necessary.
Also, I am probably way out on my pricing. If anyone is interested enough to make me an offer I would be happy to consider it and find out what the value actually is at this point in time.
If you would like to know more please ask.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my listing. Graham
