The first mass-produced coupé to feature permanent all-wheel drive, it was born directly out of the "Iltis" military project and Audi's ambitions in rallying. This iconic model also inaugurated the use of turbocharging in the Audi range, with a 2. 1-litre in-line 5-cylinder engine developing 200 bhp in its production version (WR type), launched in 1981. The Quattro WR stood out for its advanced technology for its time: quattro transmission with lockable central differential, 5-speed manual gearbox, independent suspension, and top-level performance (0 to 100 km/ h in less than 7 seconds). The car was also recognisable by its widened wings, 15-inch Ronal alloy wheels and rectangular headlamps on early versions. The Quattro's impact on competition was immediate. Entering the World Rally Championship in 1981, it outclassed the competition and ushered in the era of all-wheel drive in motor sport. It won two manufacturers' titles (1982 and 1984) and became a Group B legend with its subsequent evolutions (A1, A2, Sport Quattro). Only 11, 452 examples of the Audi Quattro WR were produced until 1991, and today it is a sought-after model, as much for its historical importance as for its driving qualities. A true icon of the 1980s, it symbolises Audi's technological avant-gardism and the advent of all-wheel drive in the sports car segment.
