The story begins in 1963, when the brilliant designer Brooke Stevens sketches a show car inspired by the 1928 Mercedes SS phaeton.
A prototype built in a mere six weeks would be the star of the New York Motor Show in 1963.
Displayed on the Studebaker stand, it drew all eyes, so much so that the car was quickly sidelined in a corner away from proceedings.
The first clients to place orders were Steve McQueen and John Wayne.
The boss of Studebaker took it badly to see those prestigious clients slip away.
Brooke Stevens then created in 1963 the Excalibur Motors marque in Milwaukee.
The first cars built, Series 1 and 2, looked a lot like the Mercedes SSK, since Brooke Stevens owned one in his personal garage.
Then the cars evolved to finally adopt a modern Chevrolet Corvette engine and gearbox.
Which means today it is very easy to find spare parts.
Series 4 and 5 were the final culmination of these exceptional cars, which still run today 42 years later as on day one.
The 1980s, however, heralded the end of a reign, that of the American dream.
Only 97 Excaliburs were built in 1985, namely 6 roadsters and 91 phaetons.
The final farewell, production ceased definitively in 1989.
Never again will it be possible to build this mythical homage to the Mercedes SSK and 540K, which today are worth a fortune.
