Engine, gearbox, axle in our workshops, possibility of extension. A Renault 12 first-generation estate, a genuine rarity! On the road, it attracts astonishment and sympathy! History With the R8, Renault offered, from the early 1960s, an excellent product for the middle class. It was therefore all the more important for the French to make the successor model as robust and comfortable as possible. From 1964 onward, the first prototypes appeared, but with a design different from later production cars. They were equipped with three asymmetric headlights on each side and a spare wheel on the boot lid. Under the bodywork, the new front-wheel-drive chassis and the engine were already positioned above the front axle. Moreover, Renault management had determined that the new car, Project 117, should feature a high-performing suspension, even on the most challenging roads in Africa. In terms of size, it was to fill the gap between the R6 and the R16, while replacing not only the R8 but also the R10. At the Paris Motor Show 1969, the moment finally arrived to present the new car. Immediately after the official presentation, orders for the new Renault 12 were recorded. Soon after the Motor Show, the first saloon versions were shown to customers and dealers. It was equipped with a 1. 3-litre four-cylinder engine developing 40 kW/ 54 hp, front disc brakes and rear drum brakes, and offered a 415-litre boot. For about the first nine months, this variant remained the only one available, followed by the five-door estate (called “Variable” in Germany or “Break” in France). In terms of equipment, besides the base version, L and TL were also available. Despite limited choice, production capacity had to be increased to 700 vehicles per day during the first half of the year to meet demand. In the summer of 1975, a major revamp was carried out, removing Gordini from the range, while the other versions received new bumpers and new lights. Inside, with the exception of the R12 L, all variants received a new dashboard. The abbreviation TR was dropped from the automatic version, now simply called R12 Automatic. For the base, L and TL versions, power was reduced to 37 kW/ 50 hp. In addition to production in France, where around 4. 01 million units were built up to 1980, Renault also produced the 12 in Australia, Brazil, Turkey and Romania. In the latter factory, the car was produced under the name Dacia until 2004, totaling nearly two million units overall. Despite this high production volume, the Renault 12 is today very rare on the roads, at least in Germany. It’s a pity, because its robustness is still evident in several African countries.
