Description

€135, 000 negotiable, original mileage, repaint by a bodyshop, the entire engine rebuilt, brakes, tires, windscreen, radiator, cooling system, all hoses, exhaust manifold, ignition, and all the fuel-injection hoses, wheels, fuse panel; all of these works were carried out at the end of 2024 and 2025, etc... History from first registration to today. ENGINE In the Dino 308 GT4, the magnificent Dino V6s give way to a V8, Tipo F106 AL, this time designed in Maranello since it’s derived from the V12 Tipo 251 of the Ferrari 365 GTB/ 4 Daytona. It was set to have an interesting career within the Ferrari range but would also benefit other brands in the Fiat group, such as the Lancia Thema 8. 32 (with a few modifications). This is also a point that this engine shares with the V6 Dino, also fitted to a Lancia, the Stratos. The designation 308 is to signify displacement, number of cylinders and number of carburettors. The lightweight-housed V8 is mounted transversely in a mid-rear position to ensure the best possible weight distribution. Thanks to its four Weber 40 DCNF double-body carburettors, power peaks at 255 horsepower and the generous torque claims 284 Nm, thus offering excellent performance, proven by the standing start kilometer clocking in just over 26 seconds. In 1978, the 308 was exported to the United States and saw its power rationed due to anti-pollution regulations, showing 240 hp at 6600 rpm. The five-speed gearbox requires a bit of adaptation due to its tendency to be a touch grabsome. In the photo (left) you can see that first gear is at bottom left, the space above being taken by reverse. The engine is, how to say... loud! In the good sense and also in the bad, as the ears take in a maximum of decibels, which at first is very pleasant, but on a long journey can end in a nasty headache. So imagine what those seated in the rear bench must feel! According to Sébastien himself (also an owner of a Fiat Dino), the sound of the V6 has more depth and charm. ON THE ROAD The tubular chassis of the Dino 308 GT4 is taken from that of the Dino 246, with a wheelbase lengthened by 210 mm. The bodywork is steel, except for the bonnet and the luggage lid, which are aluminium. The 308 GT4 is therefore not particularly light and weighs over 1, 300 kg. But the powerful breath of its V8 soon makes you forget this mass. The limited-slip differential locks in with the engine and the front and rear suspensions are independent. It’s on road, or rather on track, that this Ferrari shows its full potential. The road handling is quite remarkable, you feel like you’re in a go-kart. The rear end is playful enough to enjoy, but never overpowering the vehicle’s very healthy character. It will require considerable driving talent to fault the 308 GT4. As an option, it could even receive wider five-spoke Campagnolo wheels to improve the handling. BUYING A FERRARI DINO 308 GT4 Access to the Ferrari legend at a reasonable purchase price is the Dino 308 GT4 motto. This price should not mask the high maintenance costs that such a car requires, a detail too many buyers overlook. The key is to have a detailed and up-to-date service log before sale, otherwise you risk unpleasant surprises, the bill could be very steep. Timing, clutch, exhausts and running gear are critical points to check. The belt change (two belts, to be precise) is advised every 40, 000 km or every two years, a very short interval and perhaps exaggerated by some garages, but better not to tempt fate. The good news is that this intervention does not require removing the engine, thus not increasing the bill. Oil changes every 5, 000 km, and spark plugs every 8, 000 km. Despite its mid-rear position, there are no cooling issues with the V8 to report. With proper maintenance, bad surprises should be rare, including in the electrical area where this Ferrari seems to be spared. Repeated stops/ starts should be avoided as much as possible to prevent difficulties restarting. In any case, a booster is highly recommended to avoid any unexpected inconvenience. More precisely, the 308 GT4 is undoubtedly the most interesting thanks to its performance well above that of the 208. If you manage to find one... Another small plus of the 308 is the option to run it at the Le Mans Classic, where it is eligible due to its past on the circuit of the...
