Description

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was officially introduced in 1955. It is the fruit of a singular collaboration between Volkswagen, which provided the proven mechanical basis of the Beetle, Karmann, responsible for manufacture and body assembly, and Ghia, in charge of the design. The result is an elegant, low, and sensual car, conceived to appeal to customers seeking aesthetics without sacrificing Volkswagen’s reliability.

Technically, the Karmann Ghia adopts the Beetle’s architecture with an air-cooled rear flat-four engine and a simple yet robust chassis. It is not a sports car in the strict sense, but rather a touring coupé (and later a cabriolet) that is pleasant and easy to live with. From the outset, it stood out for a bodywork that was almost artisanal in its shaping, which explains higher production costs and more limited volumes than VW’s other models.

The early years, from 1955 to 1959, gave rise to the so-called “lowlight” models, recognisable by their low headlights. The 1960s saw a gradual evolution with slightly more powerful engines, better interior finish, and more modern equipment. From the late 1960s until production ended in 1974, the Karmann Ghia entered its final phase, marked by safety-standard updates and a more contemporary presentation. In total, around 445, 000 units were produced, which remains relatively modest on Volkswagen’s scale.

This example was delivered new in Germany in February 1972. This year corresponds to one of the very last European iterations of the Karmann Ghia. At this stage, the model had reached technical maturity while retaining much of its original charm. Under the rear deck, you’ll find the 1600 cm³ Type 1 engine, developing around 50 DIN horsepower. Paired with a four-speed manual gearbox, it offers smooth, relaxed driving, with a top speed around 145 km/ h. Performance isn’t spectacular, but reliability and ease of maintenance are part of the model’s DNA.

Aesthetically, the 1972 Karmann Ghia adopts the large rectangular rear lights introduced in the early 1970s, which significantly modernise the tail end. The bumpers are thicker than in previous decades to meet safety requirements, but the European-spec versions retain a finer profile than those destined for the American market. The overall silhouette remains harmonious, and many regard this period as a good balance between classic elegance and modern constraints.

Inside, the cabin is more functional than luxurious, but still clearly more refined than the 1950s or early 1960s models. The matte black dashboard minimises reflections, the circular instruments remain simple and legible, and the seats offer better comfort on long journeys. The heating system, often criticised on older VWs, is also improved, making the car more pleasant to use in a European climate.

The European-spec 1972 models’ specifics are important for collectors. Unlike the American versions, they are not subject to the strictest anti-pollution standards, which translates to simpler, often more reliable mechanics. The lighting, indicators, and some finish details meet European standards, and driving is generally perceived as more “authentic,” without the compromises imposed by the North American market.

This particular example features a superbly redone interior and well-maintained mechanicals. The colour combination of Willow Green exterior with a brown interior was highly appreciated at the time on the European market.
