Lamborghini Espada Series 2:
The Lamborghini Espada Series 2, unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show in 1970, embodies a unique blend of innovative technology, bold design and practicality. Designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, the Espada draws inspiration from two iconic concept cars of 1967: the Lamborghini Marzal and the Bertone Jaguar Pirana. These influences produced a bold design that was revolutionary at the time and still fascinates today.
A Grand Tourer with a distinctive character
The Espada was a four-seat GT coupé, initially offered alongside the Islero and the Miura. Although it shared its mechanical underpinnings with the more discreet Islero, the Espada was the bolder alternative. Its name, “Espada” (meaning “sword” in Spanish), refers to the weapon used by the bullfighter to strike down the bull, a fitting symbol for its sharp and distinctive styling.
The Series 2 brought notable improvements over the first generation, including a power increase of 25 horsepower, raising the 3. 9-litre V12 engine to 350 hp at 6, 500 rpm. Coupled with fully independent suspension and an advanced monocoque chassis, the Espada offered unrivalled handling and driving experience among GTs of its era. Brakes were also upgraded with the introduction of vented discs replacing solid discs.
Design and comfort
The Series 2 interior was all-new, with a rectangular dashboard for better instrument visibility. The cabin offered genuine space for four adults, a rarity in the exotic sports car segment. In addition, the spacious and practical boot made the Espada an ideal companion for long journeys.
Although the car was originally fitted with a five-speed manual, the Series 2 was also available with a Chrysler-supplied three-speed automatic. However, this option proved less suited to the high-revving V12, making the manual version the purists’ preferred choice.

A unique story
This Espada was discovered a few years ago in a French barn, where it awaited, intact and protected, better days. The current owner spared neither effort nor expense to restore it into a reliable and road-ready car. Work includes new brakes, tyres, a carburettor overhaul, and everything is documented with receipts. It was subsequently registered in Belgium after passing a stringent technical inspection.
