Description

The 1938 BSA Gold Star JM 24 is arguably the rarest and most iconic of all Gold Stars ever produced.

The Gold Star designation comes from pilots who earned the prestigious gold star after exceeding 160 km/ h (100 mph) on the famous Brooklands circuit. The 500cc OHV BSA single had established itself as one of the most proficient single-cylinder racing bikes, earning its nickname Gold Star. It was in 1938 that the new Gold Star model saw the light of day.

The 1938 Gold Star was powered by a four-stroke single-cylinder engine of 496 cc with overhead valves, designed to deliver exceptional performance and reliability. It was typically fitted with an Amal TT carburettor, ensuring precise fuel delivery for competition, contributing to blistering acceleration and an impressive top speed of 160 km/ h (100 mph).

What makes the 1938 model particularly rare is the number of unique features produced exclusively that year. Among its features are a special fuel tank with an integrated toolkit and an exceptionally rare magnesium gearbox, all details that emphasise the emphasis placed on performance and weight reduction.

This Gold Star in particular has matching numbers and a complete, well-documented history. It retains all of its period components: the aforementioned fuel tank, the magnesium gearbox, the original BSA control levers, the Lucas headlamp, the Amal TT racing carburettor, and many others.

The Gold Star has been restored in the past and exhibited at several shows. It has also undergone additional mechanical and cosmetic work in recent years, all of which is recorded in the accompanying documentation. As a result, it is in excellent mechanical and aesthetic condition.

Moreover, this Gold Star is featured in the reference work “BSA Gold Star – Super Profile” by John Gardner, a benchmark publication covering pre- and post-war Gold Star models.

Complete and original 1938 Gold Stars with matching numbers are extremely rare. This example represents an important and highly sought-after piece of British motorcycle history.

Comes with UK V5+ ownership document and import duties paid for the EU.
