Classic Car Design presents this rare and iconic 1956 Ford Thunderbird. The model was born in 1955; without claiming to rival the pure sports cars, it instead set itself up as a competitor to the Chevrolet Corvette. At the time, the styling changed every year—1956 is the only model year where the car is fitted with the continental kit and the famous porthole windows in the flanks of the hard-top.
Externally, the blue shade with a hint of turquoise grabs your attention instantly and suits this “compact” cabriolet perfectly—an ideal symbol of the Fifties—further complemented by the large whitewall tyres. Although people generally prefer to drive a Thunderbird with the wind in your hair or with the hard-top, the hood is present (not always the case) and folds fully away behind the seats. The bodywork is in very good overall condition with just a few minor imperfections. The underbody, while in reasonable condition, shows some signs of corrosion. All accessories, badges and trim are present and in good shape; only the bumpers show a little wear from age.
Inside, the cabin matches the exterior with this combination of blue and white. Overall it’s in very good condition, with no stains or rips. This strict two-seater already features an electric-adjust bench, and the windows are also electric. Passengers sit facing a nicely instrumented dashboard typical of American production, where textured metal, chrome, vinyl (skaï) and body-colour paint all sit side by side.
Mechanically, it’s the V8 312ci under the bonnet, mated to the 3-speed Ford-O-Matic gearbox. It purrs like a big cat and moves the Thunderbird along with ease—the controls are very smooth: power steering and power-assisted braking. The result is a comfortable, fluid drive.
The Thunderbird is a historic model firmly rooted in American car culture. The overall condition of this example means you can enjoy beautiful drives on secondary roads immediately and with total peace of mind. If you’re into classic car meets, there’s little chance you’ll come across another one—the model is rare in France. With this 1956 model year, you’re ready to slip into the “American Graffiti” vibe…
