Description

History of the BMW 3. 0 CSi · Series 2 offered here This 1974 BMW 3. 0 CSi belongs to the second series of the legendary E9 range. With its elegant lines, refined straight-six engine and high level of equipment, it perfectly embodies the character of the great BMW Gran Turismo of the 1970s. One of the distinctive features of this example lies in its appealing Turquoise finish, which harmonises remarkably well with the fine chrome trim and classic lines of the coupé. Its particularly comprehensive comfort equipment includes notably an electric steel sunroof, four electric windows, tinted glass, power steering as well as a high-quality interior entirely trimmed in black leather. The history of this BMW 3. 0 CSi is remarkably consistent and deeply rooted in Bavaria. The coupé was first registered in 1974 in Weiden in der Oberpfalz. In 1979, it was sold to Schirmitz, before returning to Weiden in 1986. In 1989, the BMW was finally deregistered and taken off the road – a clear and traceable history, which has become rare today for a motor car of this age. Following its acquisition by Scuderia Sportiva Colonia, the car underwent a complete "Nuts & Bolts" restoration between 2020 and 2022. The bodywork, mechanics and interior were entirely restored with the greatest care. The objective was by no means to carry out a simple cosmetic refresh, but to recreate a motor car of exceptional quality, whilst preserving the appearance, elegance and driving feel so characteristic of a classic BMW E9. The restoration went far beyond conventional dismantling: the bodywork itself was dismantled deep into its load-bearing structure, before being rebuilt step by step. The various phases of this particularly thorough restoration are documented in a detailed restoration file. Wherever relevant and possible, original historical components were retained. When their replacement proved necessary, the work was carried out to the standards of a particularly demanding artisanal restoration. In 2026, a technical fault concerning the engine lubrication system led to the complete opening of the powertrain once more. Scuderia Sportiva deliberately chose not to limit itself to a spot repair, but to carry out a complete mechanical overhaul. The straight-six engine was thus completely dismantled, inspected, measured and then rebuilt according to proper procedures. On this occasion, the engine received new pistons and rings. The cylinder head was also completely overhauled, whilst the flow in the intake tracts and gas exchange were subject to further optimisation. All important components were inspected and, where necessary, restored or replaced. The mechanical heart of this BMW 3. 0 CSi thus presents itself today in a remarkably fresh state. The newly rebuilt engine is currently still in its careful running-in phase – quite an exceptional feature for a classic motor car over fifty years old. Combined with the very low mileage covered since completion of the restoration and its exceptional state of preservation, these factors give this coupé less the impression of a classic motor car over five decades old than that of a BMW E9 whose second life is only just beginning. Beyond its complete restoration, this BMW has benefited from a few carefully selected technical enhancements. The guiding principle has always remained the same: each modification had to preserve the character of the E9 whilst enhancing its qualities as a true Gran Turismo. The original gearbox has been replaced by a 5-speed box with overdrive fifth gear. This fifth gear allows the engine speed to be reduced at high cruising speed and thus further emphasises the CSi's qualities as a great touring coupé – without altering its original character. A stainless steel exhaust line combines durability with the deep sonority characteristic of the BMW straight-six. 16-inch alloy wheels with a classic Alpina-style design bring a slightly more sporting touch without detracting from the period appearance of the E9. A few comfort and safety features, integrated discreetly, complete the package and make the use of this classic more enjoyable in current traffic conditions.
