Description
Declared "car of the 1980s" by CAR magazine, the Peugeot 205, launched in 1983, was indeed the model that pulled the Sochaux manufacturer out of the crisis that threatened its very survival in the early 1980s.
Beyond the highly exclusive and rare TURBO 16, the GTI version remains the most iconic version and perhaps the finest representative of the "youngtimer" trend that we hold so dear. For many of us, it is indeed the "madeleine de Proust" – unattainable, an indelible memory or unfulfilled desire from our teenage years.
Following the initial 1. 6/ 105 bhp versions launched from March 1984, power increased by 10 bhp in 1986.
That same year, Peugeot launched the convertible version of what was already its best-seller. This open-top version, bodied by Pininfarina, retained the three-door base but received a fabric hood, a safety roll bar and a specific rear section. Offered in carburettor CJ and CT versions, it is the CTI, equipped with the legendary GTI engine, that remains the most sought-after.
This is precisely the version we are offering you, dating from December 1987. Presented in a striking Rosso Vallelunga (P3KB), this convertible presents a condition that can be described as "restoration approaching as-new": indeed, the owner who acquired it in 2021 spent two full years completely rebuilding the car (mechanically and cosmetically) in his personal workshop. A recently retired mechanic, he undertook absolutely monumental work on the car, sourcing every ball joint, bolt, rubber bush, screw and linkage to restore his 205 to like-new condition. The cost of these parts came to €2, 300, to which must be added engine overhaul at €4, 166. The time spent on this mechanical work can be estimated at 600 hours, unbilled of course. As for the cosmetic work, it was outsourced for painting (€4, 100), with hardware and trim invoices totalling nearly €6, 000.
We have just carried out a major service on the car, bringing recent invoicing to nearly €17, 000 for a truly stunning result on a "rebuilt" 205 CTI. This enormous undertaking, carried out by a passionate enthusiast, would undoubtedly have cost double with a recognised specialist.
Thus we are offering you the opportunity to acquire a 205 CTI in an incredible condition, worthy of a show such as Rétromobile, but without manufacturer certification, with a driving pleasure that will remind many of their carefree years.
