This unique 1966 Austin Gipsy Diesel is for sale. An authentic British 4x4 from yesteryear, it is nowadays considerably rarer than other European 4x4s of its generation.
Developed by Austin in the late 1950s, the Gipsy had a clear objective: to compete directly with the Land Rover. Its design, both practical and robust, was intended for agricultural and industrial work, as well as public services, military use and off-road driving.
This model is equipped with a diesel engine, a configuration perfectly suited to its utilitarian character. Its straightforward mechanics, four-wheel drive transmission and sturdy construction allow it to tackle the most challenging conditions, offering a driving experience entirely different from that of any modern 4x4.
One of the most interesting aspects of the Austin Gipsy lies precisely in its construction. Whilst the Land Rover made extensive use of aluminium for its bodywork, the Gipsy, faithful to a more traditional approach, opted for steel. It also distinguished itself through the initial use of the unique Flexitor independent suspension system, employing rubber elements, a rather advanced and unconventional technical solution for a vehicle of this type.
