Description
For Sale: Bentley MK VI (1950) Model history Bentley MK VI A new era for Bentley Presented in 1946, the Bentley MK VI marked a turning point in the history of the British marque. As the first post-war Bentley, it ushered in a new era for the Crewe-based manufacturer. For the first time, Bentley offered a car fully assembled in its own workshops. It received a mass-produced steel body. This development allowed the company to reach a wider clientele while preserving the prestige of the marque. A traditional and refined mechanical specification The Bentley MK VI combines robustness, comfort and elegance. Beneath its long bonnet sits a 4, 257 cc straight-six engine, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. This mechanical layout favours flexibility and driving pleasure, allowing long distances to be covered in remarkable comfort. A cabin showcasing British craftsmanship Inside, the Bentley MK VI honours the British tradition of artisan craftsmanship. The fine woodwork, leather trim and spacious cabin create an elegant atmosphere. The quality of materials and the care taken over the finish bear witness to Bentley's expertise. This pursuit of comfort and refinement contributes to the marque's reputation, alongside Rolls-Royce. Bodywork in many guises The majority of Bentley MK VIs received the standard steel body. The manufacturer also offered a chassis intended for independent coachbuilders. Prestigious houses such as H. J. Mulliner, Park Ward and James Young then produced bespoke bodies, and their creations gave rise to motor cars with varied lines. Some were built in very small series. An iconic post-war production Produced from 1946 to 1952, the Bentley MK VI played a key role in the marque's revival after the Second World War. Its success paved the way for the Bentley R-Type, which succeeded it in 1952. According to figures published by Bernard L. King, total production reached 5, 186 examples, of which 121 were destined for the French market. Today, the MK VI appeals to collectors through its timeless elegance and traditional mechanicals. It embodies a certain idea of British motoring, where refinement, comfort and quality of construction hold an essential place. History of this Bentley MK VI for sale The 59th car delivered new in 1950 to Paris, this Bentley MK VI, chassis number B149FU, is one of the rare examples to have retained its original leather upholstery, now in remarkable condition. Our records trace its history back to at least August 1966, when it wore the registration 1892 TF 75. In January 1968 it changed hands and began a long period under the registration 15 GK 91, which it kept until 2009. It then passed to a new owner in 2003, still in Essonne, and then to another owner in 2009, with whom it has remained to this day. Cecil Cars has regularly maintained this Bentley in its workshops since 2003, the year of its first sale through our establishment. This relationship of trust, which has lasted more than twenty years, reflects the careful attention this car has received. The preservation of its original upholstery, in exceptional condition, highlights the authenticity of this example and the timeless refinement of post-war Bentleys. Bodywork The bodywork of this Bentley MK VI is in remarkable condition. The shell is perfectly sound and stands out for the precision of its fit. The doors and opening panels close perfectly and the hinges show no play, all signs of a car carefully maintained and preserved over the decades. The car wears an elegant black finish, and the paintwork, which is particularly old, has retained the original pinstriping that accentuates the lines of the body. The production records, however, list an original colour of Tudor Grey. The person from whom we acquired this Bentley in 2003 had always known it as black, so it is impossible for us to determine with certainty when it was repainted. Today, this older paint contributes to the car's charm, while the excellent condition of the body bears witness to the care taken to preserve it throughout its history. Upholstery and woodwork The cabin of this Bentley MK VI is one of its most remarkable assets. Its leather upholstery is entirely original, a particularly rare and precious feature for a 1950 motor car. The leather shows a superb patina and remains in exceptional condition, testifying to the care this Bentley has received over the decades. The original woodwork also deserves particular attention...
