The Appeal

This is something completely different, a true one-off. At first glance (and from the front), it's a majestic old Citroën 15-6, the top-of-the-range version of the iconic Traction Avant.

But the story behind this vehicle is something completely unique. The car was originally owned by a Citroën dealer in Belgium, who used it as a company vehicle. It was then sold to a friend who took it on a trip in 1959, but an accident occurred. The 15-6 was hit from behind by a reckless driver and the rear was badly damaged.

However, this same owner was very fond of his car, and decided to put it back on the road, but by making it something unique. At the front, he modified the headlights to lower them and integrate them into the wings, but it was at the rear that things got really interesting. With the chassis and axle undamaged in the accident, the owner acquired a Vauxhall Victor estate from a scrapyard and began his own graft, integrating the narrow rear of the Vauxhall between the rear wings of the wide Traction Avant to create a bespoke and unique hunting estate.

The owner then used the car for a few years before parking it in his garden, where it was discovered in 1980 by a British enthusiast and partially recommissioned. In 1984, it was purchased by a certain Monsieur Michon, a well-known Traction Avant collector, who spent five years restoring the car and has preserved it ever since.

Now on sale, it is a rare and unusual one-off that is sure to attract worldwide attention.

The History and Paperwork

  • Manufactured in 1951
  • Damaged in an accident in 1959
  • The car was transformed into a station wagon in 1959 by an English coachbuilder in Sussex. It was acquired in 1980 by Dutch collector Nico Michon, who restored it completely.
  • The current owner acquired the vehicle in 2020 and partially restored it a second time.
  • Rebuilt using the rear of a Vauxhall Victor FB estate car
  • Photographic record of the conversion work presented in an album
  • Large file documenting the work carried out at the time of re-commissioning and since then
  • Swiss registration papers

The Condition

  • Repainted dark green
  • Lambert-Nivelles wheels sought
  • Completely unique, bespoke bodywork
  • Very sound and attractive overall, with a few minor cosmetic imperfections
  • Paintwork still retains its beautiful shine
  • After-market yellow fog lights
  • Lowered, contoured front end
  • Unique estate bodywork
  • Reworked interior in red leatherette
  • Body-painted dashboard
  • Original two-spoke Bakelite steering wheel
  • Reworked beige carpets in good condition
  • Elegant door panels and roof lining
One thing's for sure, you won't see another car like this! The car is quite well known in Citroën Light 15 circles and is truly unique.

Although an older restoration, it still looks great, and looks great in its green paint, which was chosen to replace the original black. Look closely and you'll find some minor imperfections, but for a car restored over 35 years ago, it still looks fantastic.

Inside, the seats have been reworked in rich red leather and still look great, and the carpets have been renewed. The rest has a lovely light patina that adds character without looking neglected.

The Mechanics

  • 2.8-litre cast iron in-line six-cylinder engine
  • Four-speed manual transmission
  • Triple inlet carburettor conversion
  • The seller tells us it runs well with no known faults
Six-cylinder 15s were sturdy beasts, powered by a lazy but indestructible in-line six-cylinder engine with 78bhp, and that's what's under the bonnet of this example. It starts and runs well and is livelier than a standard example thanks to a triple carburettor conversion with a homemade intake manifold.

The car was extensively mechanically overhauled during its restoration by Mr Michon and remains in perfect running order, with a smooth shifting transmission and no known or apparent mechanical faults.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
€0 to €9,999 €100.00
€10,000 to €49,999 €250.00
€50,000 to €99,999 €500.00
€100,000 + €1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
